Not a dumb question at all! Actually, I find that sometimes my computer does what you're experiencing, and sometimes it shows the main screen side by side with the particular message I'm viewing. I'm not sure how to specify that side by side look - computer seems to have a mind of its own.
Anyway, my suggestion is to save the main page as a favourite. That way you can go into favourites and easily get back to the main page if you want to.
