Pleeease tell me it is NOT over!!!!
Two weeks ago, a heatwave, record highs, this week chilly nights and cool mornings. I can smell autumn in the air. I just packed away the boys warmer clothing a month ago, and I am already having to scramble through them again.
I think even the Maple trees are surprised! They're probably having a tree-to-tree discussion right now:
'did you feel the nip in the air'
'yip, should we be changing our colours?'
'I don't know, it's too early, let's ask Oak'
'hey, Oak, what's up with the weather?'
'I was wondering that myself, should we turn?'
'mmm, lets wait a few weeks, and see'
'yeah, we don't want to scare the humans!'
'The squirrels seem a bit confused too'
'well, as long as Grass is still growing, we're ok'
:D

Well, on my walk at lunch today, I saw a lawn with FREAKIN' RED MAPLE LEAVES on it!!!! I can't believe it -- halfway through August, and a maple tree is already getting naked!!!!!
This past weekend at the cottage was COLD. It was almost too cold to swim -- and when I did swim, the cold water made my ears hurt and the cold wind made my head hurt :( And we had FIVE blankets on the bed!!! The weekend before, we needed a fan to keep cool!!!
This is all my hubby's fault -- he installed a ceiling fan at the cottage, and BAM, cold weather. Grrr!!!!!
Whoever says there's no such thing as global warming, I say :p phhhttttt. How else do you explain the bizarre weather trends we've been having????
I don't want summer to be over
Actually I have to admit to feeling like I shouldn't be complaining. I think this is the first summer I can remember in ages that has really felt like summer in Calgary. We're used to getting dumps of snow on and off into May and living with rainy July's etc. and have had none of that this year. It's basically been pretty nice since April (well extra hot which wasn't a help, but all the same summer stuck this year more than others). I sure hope we get the same for fall too. I just have too much to get done still outside in this new house before the snow flies so I need a nice fall.
I read that leaves may fall earlier this year, due to the prolonged heat spells. I am sure the trees were as stressed out as we were. Doesn't it seem that once we are getting used to the cool weather, there is always that last blast of heat in September?
Well considering the heat and humidity appears to start earlier lately, like in May, I think the summer season has been moved up, but fall is a great time of year..cooler for sleeping , no humidity and the good TV shows start soon at night, so I would say yes, sure feels like summer is on it's way out. The gardens look like fall as the heat brought all the blooms out so fast that there is not much left here anyway to look at. I can take this weather after the heat very nicely. :)

Right now it's perfect weather, no humidity........we're actually sitting out longer because the mosquitoes are not as bad in this kind of weather.

I am trying so hard to excuse or ignore the yellow leaves that have appeared in Calgary. And I won't be telling you how I had my fleece on last night or that I made hot chocolate the night before.
On the 'it still must be summer' front. I have my flowers and such still sitting on the outside table waiting to go in the ground. They are very pretty even after being there well over a month. I have to dig the beds first and haul the dirt I bought over to the area. Most are perennials, so they have to get into the ground so it must still be summer right?
Well, personally, I can say that my summer starts in a couple of weeks, We have vacation rentals so July and August are work, work and more work -- lots of stress, and not much fun...so September and October are officially designated as summer chez nous...I love the cool nights and so do my plants...I can see them perk up and spread out their leaves in enjoyment... :fireworks
We are screening in the front porch and I have just put two coats of paint on the floor, it needs one more, then the walls go up -- can't wait to see the final result -- want to buy some pretty wicker furniture for it...then next spring I'm gonna sit in it and hold my arm really close to the screen and say Yummy Yummy to all the ravening mosquitoes...
