Sweet Peas

I am determined to grow sweet peas this summer. I tried last year, but few seeds germinated & they hardly grew. The soil they were in is not the greatest. I will be improving the soil there, but only really top dressing as I have vines there that are doing well.My garden faces south & it gets very hot from 11-2 or 3. I would prefer to grow them up my large trellis privacy screen that covers one end of my deck. I have already bought seeds & could you tell me how to start them indoors. I also read that since they are so slow to germinate, to cut an end off with nail clippers & then soak them in water??? Plse also recommend a specific variety. I'm in Ottawa, which is zone 5a.
Also, do you know of a variety of climbing hydragena that would grow in full sun up the same privacy trellis and/or along my fence (also in the sun). Thanks for any suggestions.

I am going to try to grow mine in a container this year. I have a back porch which is protected with plastic sheeting right now, so I have mine planted already - I knicked the seeds and planted them according to the package instructions. I constructed a climbing support from bamboo and string. When the weather is nicer (if ever) I will move them outside.

I love them the smell is so nice and i just turned the soil tossed in the seeds sometimes I would soak them if I thought about it soon enough. Other years just right out of the packet and water string to hold them up and loads of pretty flowers. With them the more you cut them the more they flower.I always grew them on the chain link fence to give us alittle privacy from the neighbours and let them pick from their side and they were always so happy.

Hi: Yes both sweet peas and morning glories have a hard shell on the seeds. You can nick them like someone told you and soak in tepid water for 48 hrs. or so. This will speed germination. I have no problems growing either from sowing seeds right into the soil. Do not water too much before they sprout as you may rot the seeds in the ground. Good soil will help too. :)
