i'm a collector of many things.....jugs, old suitcases, plants....i have a great weakness for chairs which hubby isn't that kean on...but in time i'll convince him to let me have an entertaining room with nothing but chairs. i also collect antiques...it's in my blood.....so it's natural for me to go to auctions, antique stores, thrift stores and yes, sometimes i curb side shop. i so love finding a treasure...some are still waiting for my attention in the basement, while others have been incorporated into my home as is. the idea of reusing something makes me feel good, it gives the item a new life...wheather it's the life it was intended for is not always the case in my house, but i like it that way. my home is a relection of my hubby and i....we're both eclectic and imaginative.
this post is brought to you today (lol) because several posts recently have been on my mind and i wanted to share with you the treasures i have found along my journey....as previously mentioned, these are from antique stores, thrift shops, auctions and curbsides.....btw...the most expensive of these items was $25.00...god, i love to get a deal.... :D

i was just going to tell you it was an iron...but i was beat to it :biglol:
it must be fairly old....cuz i suspect the handle would get pretty hot when the actual ironing part was being heated....probably took a few proto types before they got it right....lol i love it....i'd use it as a door stop too.
It could be what was once a working iron, as the size of the bottom is about what my real one is. The ebay seller listed it as a 'doorstop or ?' so I'm not sure. I just bought it because I thought it looked cool!
I googled and found a couple of examples of one piece irons. Maybe yours was a working iron? In one picture it looks like he's using a cloth or something to protect himself from the heat.
Yup, all one piece.
Is that handle part of it (as in one piece)? I have the type with detachable handle but haven't seen one quite like that one before.
Almost forgot-here's another odd decor item I bought for display in the laundry room. I think it's a doorstop. It has been painted silver in its past and there is rust coming through, but it's iron and weighs a ton. I liked the monogram "B" and paid a fair bit for this strange ebay purchase due to weight/shipping cost. Still I felt it was worth it........never have seen one like it!
the community next to me has special pick ups for bulk items every few weeks begiining mid spring until fall. the first pick up of the season is always the best.... :biglol: no i don't pack a lunch and go for the day or anything. :biglol: ...but i've got to tell you i'm always amazed at what people put out by the curb.
my first experience of curbside shopping i was probably 8..... my mom spotted an antique sewing machine at the end of our neighbours driveway....and she wanted me to help her drag it home  i was mortified.... i was 8  ...i've been hooked ever since....that rush of adrenaline pushing that thing home destroyed any embarrassment that had been my initial reaction. so i come from a line of scavangers ;)
I picked up my first curb side find a couple of weeks ago. I was in search for a small black tv stand and there it was! Free is GREAT! ....and if I don't like it when I put it in the bedroom, I will let someone else grab it curb side.
this curb thing....I've wondered about this seeing Junk Brothers and seeing people mention it. Are people allowed to put furniture out for pickup? here you can only put out certain things and generally that excludes furniture. We can put things out in the alley (basically if they are on our lot) with 'free' signs or whatever but there doesn't seem to be much reason to cruise the allies (at least none I've ever seen).
love the antiques! I miss picking stuff up on the curb. I found when i lived in Nova Scotia the pickings weren't as good as Toronto. Keep the pictures coming!
It worked for a while, but the family apparently needs more than this gentle reminder. I've moved on to picking up the sock balls in my hand and winging them right back at them. :D
publick notice...he he what a great find dawn, i love it...and it seems an appropriate place to hang it....hope your message is working for you ;)
I"m sure the first time I saw a Hoosier was on the show called The Furniture Guys. That show was almost before its time, as HGTV was not born yet, with the guys refinishing, reupholstering, etc.
The headboard I parted with was a Full, just too large for DS's room. The other one is only 30 years old but it's got some history as it's from my bed when I was younger and living at home.
Your laundry room should be fun! Decorating mine is still years away, as i really need a reno there. I have no idea what kind of display space I'll have, but it will definitely be limited. So far I picked up some weathered old clothespins I hope to display in a mason jar, and a couple of retro-look tins for supplies. I have a wooden child's ironing board and iron from Ikea I'd like to keep in there too-DD played with it when she was small. Oh, and there is this message board I'm making use of in there for the time too. I found it in a used shop. I don't have a permanent spot for it, so I've not bothered replacing the worn fabric on the post board part. One day it struck me I could use it for the time being to post a reminder to the family, so it got a place on a small wall after only a moment with chalk, hammer, and nail.
thanks ladies, i'm glad u like my found treasures...and it's good to know there's fellow treaure hunters amongst us. my neice calls me anti que, her little pun on words, cuz everytime i visit them in nova scotia i'm dragging her off to antique shops with me :D
dawn, i of love the term 'catch and release' and suspect it'll be a household term here. when my pieces are released they always go to the restore, another of my haunts. btw, that was a great bed you parted with....curious to see the one you kept.
thanks dust bunny for the explaination of hoosier...the reason they bear that name is because at one time they were exclusively made in hooosier, indiana in the early 1900's. at the time the hoosier revoltionized the kitchen and went on to become an essential part of the womens effecient kitchen ;) they are a rare find on this end of the country and to my knowledge were very popular in ontario.
i'm presently on the look out for antique laundry paraphenalia for my soon to be ready to decorate laundry room. i have but one piece now, my mil's washing board, pre owning a washing machine she used it to scrub the clothes of 10 of her kids  can you imagin???
Cathie, I love your treasures! Imagine all the stories those items can tell, as a previous poster wrote down. I too, love old stuff and when I have a chance I like to wander around the antique stores......DH loves to collect old tools and he's got a weakness for them when we're around antique shops.
Cathie you mentioned curbside shopping.........there is nothing wrong with that.............my mom loved to do that and sometimes she came home with brand new stuff because New Yorkers throw stuff out when they're moving, rather than lugging it with them to their next residence..........she used to get a thrill when she found "stuff"........I still have 2 TVs she found and they're still working perfectly.........It will be a sin to let them go in the garbage (and who wnats more garbage in our dumps  )
Anyway, do share anytime you acquire something new....I really enjoyed seeing your TREASURES.....thanks for sharing.
A hoosier is a fairly large kitchen piece and I am afraid I have no idea why they are called that. It's the one that looks like a tall wood cabinet in the pictures. They were 'the baking centre' most of the time and often have flour bins on a hinge so they tip out for easy access, marble or metal tops (for rolling pastry) and general storage space. They used to be pretty common (because nearly every kitchen had one before built in cabinets came into being) but in the past 20 years or so are getting harder and harder to find and when you do they cost a pretty penny.
My grandparents had one and it vanished. One of those 'why would you want that old thing?" when I asked what happened to it (I think my mom and aunts thought I was a little loopy but I still love those old things I managed to save). To show how things can work out, around the same time I found out my granddad had a captains trunk which someone had taken and stuffed in their basement. Last spring, 30 years after me first asking about it, one of my cousins dropped it off. It's a little bent and dented and pretty worn but I think it's perfect and I'm really happy to finally have it.
Ok I don't buy things like this not a garage sale person and not into old things at all but I do know some of you are and great finds for you but what is a "Hoosier" never heard of that one before.
cathie, you have found yourself some awesome deals..........in my opinion antiques will be around forever.........im still in awe that you found these deals all under 25 bucks, ecspecially the hoosier! I too love to yard sale. Good going girl! :clapping:

we also have a kijiji, a yardsale site and a craigslist.
Cathie. Some really good finds! I am, for some reason, drawn to the old stuff too. I don't know why (I tend to lean more towards the contemporary style) but I do love antiques and I am facinated by the history of things. I love to go to flea markets or stop at a little antique place at the side of the road. It is really amazing what people collect! I once saw an orchard ladder-----it was really different--------about 12 or 14 ft. high----it came together to a point at the top and I was facinated by its shape. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not buying that. It had all weathered----so neat and unusual! I have been in touch with a man in the US that makes them but they are new and he does not ship to Canada. If I do go anywhere that has antiques or old salvaged stuff my first question is "Do you have any orchard ladders?" Anyway ---if those suitcases that you have could talk--------- could you imagine the stories they could tell?
Ooh, I can imagine the fun you've had with these finds. I love a good find myself, and i'm not too proud to stop curbside when I see a sign propped up against something that says "FREE". Heck, I've stopped when there is NO sign and knocked on the door to ask "Are you really throwing this out?" Generally I don't do as well as you have done, price-wise, but it's still good fun and I consider it an entertainment expense, or hobby.
Sometimes I do a bit of catch and release, or 'fostering', when I buy things I'm not positive about using. I give the thing my home for a while, and then get it back out there if I can't use it after all. Keeps my inventory down, and it supports the charities too! Here is a headboard/footboard I picked up at a thrift shop for $40, which I just recently donated to another thrift shop after making a decision to use another headboard I have. I didn't exactly cut down on my inventory though, as I donated it right around Christmas and the shop was a bit reluctant to take on more furniture donations as they were pretty full. No problem, as there were a few things in the shop I'd been eyeing but using great restraint to leave without. But then I said, "Will you take it if I make a furniture purchase today?" and came home with 2 tables in the car. :D
that's exactly how i feel dbd, it's like i'm now a chapter in their story, if that makes sence...in years to come someone else will discover it and bring it home...and the saga continues....for whatever reasons this idea warms me toes :) and yes, i did get my hoosier for under $25....but it also had about 50 coats of paint on it.....it was well worth the effort of stripping it....cuz i think it looks incredible.
luvto....i'm really taken with the craftsman period as well.....from the furniture to lighting there's something so appealing about it...it's clean lined and solid. be patient luvto you'll come across your plate rack ;)
Cathie...
I can appreciate your great finds....now that I have a century old home I am drawn to antiques stores....I love craftsman style, Americana, Canadiana and primitive furniture....I browse 2 antique stores on a regular basis....I found an old jam cuboard the other day and I have put all my kids pictures in black frames on each shelf.....I saw an old ladder that I want to get too.....I am currently keeping my eye out for an old plate rack maybe done in a black finish....I want to put that in my kitchen with some old plates.....thanks for sharing.......
Oh would I kill to have that kitchen stool and hoosier (If you got that for less than $25....what a deal!). I like the way you've used the things you have too.
I've always liked antiques and older things and have quite a few too. there are some really good finds in thrift stores, garage sales, auctions if you can keep your eye on the places. Most of these things were built to last and deserve to be kept in service and the character and life they add is something special.
i'd love for you to come to st. john's...we'll shop....go to the pubs...shop...haggle...we'll have a blast.
isn't that coffee table chic...it's my noguchi wanna be.... what it wants to be is in use  and in time it will be....i'm so glad u like it.
for the most part i have no excuse to buy either....when it comes to furniture i have a deal made with my hubby....if a new find comes in something has got to go out....so i've got to give it some serious thought before i buy anything big
You have me drooling. I so want that coffee table - well truthfully I love all your finds. $25 or less - a shopper's dream come true. I love garage sales and thrift stores. Just poking around for that special find. This town is geared to professional, cutthroat shoppers - takes the fun out of it. I've had to cut back since we downsized - I have no excuse to buy as I need to sell. Like you I pick up pieces that I have creative ideas for but regretfully they are just sitting on the shelf.
Thrift shopping - another reason I have for wanting a vacation in Newfoundland.
okay, last ones ;)
oh....and these tooo........
