Welcome to my Dining Room Progress Thread :)
I'll post regularly (when there's stuff to share) and keep you all up-to-date!
We live in an itty bitty bungalow. It's so small, in fact, that it doesn't have a dining room. So we're transforming our front bedroom into this very important room.
Unfortunately - because I was out of commission for a few weeks and so couldn't help (darn surgery) - progress has been snail-paced. Over the last few weeks DH has slowly been pulling down the plaster & lathe in the room. Next week our electrician will be in to remove the knob & tube in this room and re-wire it properly. Jason the Electrician-Guy is the best! Then we can start to insulate and drywall.
But...
We're also making some structural changes to this room. Take a look at these pics:

The easiest thing to explain... we're going to be building a larger opening/doorway through to the dining room (represented in red above)... but it'll be shifted to the right of the current doorway by about 2 feet.
The reason we're shifting the doorway to the right about 2 feet? That's where the new wall will be. Yep... we're making the room smaller. The reason? The bedroom on the other side of this room is our teeny tiny bedroom. We're going to make it 2 feet larger.
Anyway... we're really looking forward to this part of our renovation if for no other reason then that we get a larger bedroom! But of course it'll also means that we'll have a place to gather for dinner rather then the living room. I also like that it will open up the house a little - the new larger doorway will connect the living room with the dining room with the kitchen. Our house can't be "open concept", but this new doorway will at least lend itself to that feeling a little.
Naturally DH will have to find a new place to store his golf clubs  :D

Your kitchen is very nice.
My kitchen is new and I choosed dark brown for my doors and a dark counter top and I regret it.
I dont know what I choosed that because I dont like dark colours to much.
I wonder if you could remove the glass top and replace it with a wooden top or a larger top and still use the existing base?
IMHO what you have is definitely workable. I don't know what you are doing with window coverings, but if you recover the seats of those chairs to coordinate, I think they look fine. When I was in South Africa I visited someone who had kind of similar chairs, and had made back cusions for them that looked incredible - they attached to the top and bottom crossbars but not with ties - they looked permanent, and were smooth and tight so from the back the design of the chair back stood out in silhouette but from the front they looked upholstered. Really elevated both the look and the comfort of the chair. Just a thought.
The table is nice, and any formal dinner parties just require a white linen table cloth (or a variation thereof - lol) to transform it.
You know Wolfbaby... it's funny, but by adding colour to this one room I was hoping to achieve that additional "notch" :) Inspired is a grand concept... I don't know if it was inspired, but I definitely appreciate you suggesting that it was!! :D
Arizona - I don't have a dining room table :(
What I have is the set seen in this photo of my old kitchen:

I love this table and chairs, but I had hoped to use it in my kitchen (which is where I feel it's best suited). Unfortunately it's too large for that space. The table is 42" in diametre and, as you can see, it has four chairs.
What I was thinking I might do is replace these chairs with, maybe, parsons' chairs. OR I might find a way to create a parson's chair out of these chairs (with foam, batting and slip covers). But I definitely have to keep the table for now.
My dream dining room table? I haven't put much thought into it!
A round table, likely somewhat contemporary in it's lines with lower-backed upholstered chairs, I think. I'm going to do a google search and see what tickles my fancy :D
Also in this dining room - and I have no choice about it - is an old roll-top desk. It'll be placed against the far wall and will act a little like a buffet cabinet (although taller).
What's wrong with your existing dining room table? What would be your dream dining room table? Maybe we can give your existing one a rebirth until the new one comes along. :D
All your rooms are so beautiful, and this one seems to take everything around it up another notch. The hit of colour is inspired. Wow.
Thank you so much everyone! :)
Inglewood, Arizona = the colour is BM's Bronze Tone
It's a daring colour choice for me because, Arizona, I am very afraid of colour!! Even though I knew I wanted an orange in this room, I delayed on the colour choice for some time! And when it came time to paint I nearly had a panic attack after the first stroke! I told myself to wait until all the walls had 2 coats on them before I judged things. I'm sooooo glad I went with the orange!
Chocolat = not quite completed. We still have to install a trim detail on the ceiling and some crown moulding.
Then there's the decorating... I need art for the walls and I have to make drapes! I wish I could get a new dining room table, but I'll have to use the one I have... :(
Another great project completed.......great colour choice:clapping:
Yes TT, WHICH orange is that?
I love how you are incorporating the orange in adjacent spaces so the orange doesn't come as a complete shock to a visitors system :D
It warms my heart that you are not afraid of colour. I see all these neutral rooms and it gets so boring after a while. Hopefully you will inspire others to take a chance. I can see that colour looking almost sinful with dark coloured wood dining room furniture.
LOVE, LOVE ,LOVE IT:clapping:
WOW I really do love that colour combo!!
Love the shot of colour! Which orange did you use?
Very nice love the colours
you are right the colors relate nicely.....im not a bold color person but i too think that orange and room is awesome :clapping:.....i can hardly wait to do some wainscotting in our house.

AWESOME!!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
The last time I posted any progress news on this thread was back in June!
Since then this room served time as our bedroom and then our building supply room. :D
A couple of weeks ago we finally got back to work in this space, starting with the install of the window trim and paneled wainscoting. DH did a wonderful job!
And this weekend, I finally painted. :D
Smoodgie asked me to post pics of the painted room so - even though we still have to install crown moulding and a special ceiling trim - here it is!
First... another photo of the wall where we hung our print because, I feel, it really shows how the colours relate.

I love how the window and wainscoting look!

It's pretty bold!!
Hope you like it... we do!!
Can't wait for your finished pics and your BR thread!!!!!! Everthing seems to be completed so quickly and goes together like clockwork. I can imagine that there are fustrations that we don't see but you make everything look so effortless and organized. Planning must be the key.
TT as much as I liked your Tiffany style chandelier I felt it was too much of the same as the countertop lights. Guess the hanging crooked issue was meant to be. Everything is coming together so well ... and it is so much more fun watching you do it.
Will be staying tuned for your BR thread.
I love your granite!!!
Thanks for your comments, Jeep and Sweetpea.
My Son and his GF just came in and loved it! While I was looking at it I realised that it has such lovely detail that just doesn't show up on the photos.
Yes, Sweetpea... I think it'll work wonderfully with the room when it's all together!
DH and I are about to clear it out and move our bed in... almost time to start my "bedroom progress thread"!!
I like your new chandy Vickie, it has alot of substance.....once everything comes together this fixture will blend in perfectly. It is so nice when you find something you love instead of settling for something that " will do" :)
Very nice not my style but whats important is you love it and it hangs straight.
Well... I hunted through 4 lighting stores yesterday without much luck :(
So I returned to the original store (store #5) where I found those three fixtures I posted about a month back knowing that they had some things that I liked. And I bought a chandelier!
I love the tiffany at this store (you'll have to scroll back to see) but it would have put me about $300 over DH's budget, so I went $100 over budget instead :D and got this pretty one:

All mounted by our electrician today!!
I actually love it :) and think it's great in our space. It's (obviously) not arts & crafts, but with it's fluted bowl it IS vintage inspired yet contemporary with the intertwined leaves. Just my style!
Tell me what you think!
You know when 'they' say things happen for a reason????
Fate or destiny ?
A new fixture is waiting for you somewhere !!
DBD... I wish I could say yes!!
As it happens, we also have a few other projects on the go. For example, we're painting the exterior of the house right now (I'm working on the railings of my deck) - my Brother is coming over in a few weeks to spray the walls. Also... we have a lot of yard work to do... including building some block walls and stairs.
So... not much relaxing!!
But at least the main floor of the house will be done (well... almost - still have to do the bathroom... maybe in the fall?)!!
I have bad-ish news, though...
:(
This afternoon our electrician mounted the dining room's new light fixture only for us to see that it was wonky... the bar down the centre that holds the tiffany bowl doesn't hang straight so the bowl won't sit level. :(
So... we're returning it.
AND... I get to search for something else! :D :confetti:
I feel a little guilty because I'm happy about this... but maybe I can find something that I like better AND works for DH's budget!!
I'm going shopping on Saturday.
Wish me luck!!
You guys are making so much progress. Once you finish the DR and bedroom can you relax a bit?
Sweetpea3... no need to come help 'cause the grueling work is finished... unless you prefer the easy stuff! :p
DH has finished the drywall... and it's primed and ready to go!!
Here are some pics:

I know... doesn't look like much... but it's getting close to DONE!!
I shouldn't get too excited...
Now that we've reached this stage, dining room progress will be on hold :( Over the next day or so we'll clean up our mess and then move our bedroom stuff into this space. DH might want to put trim on the windows first, but I don't think it's important seeing as how we'll have to do trim in all the rooms... might as well do it all at the same time. Anyway... once our bedroom is empty we can start tearing out the plaster/lathe AND the closet walls in there (I see another forum progress-thread coming)! As soon as we can move back into our bedroom we'll finish the dining room. I'm still having visions of russet orange walls with white panel wainscotting!!
So... this may be the last post you see in this tread for some time!!
Well... I may post one more... the electrician should be coming by this evening to hang our chandelier!
This is the one that DH wanted... so we purchased it:

I like it (the colours will work wonderfully with my overall plan)... I don't love it... but peace in my home is also important!
OMG Vickie what a cute couple......You guys sound like a great bunch to be around & if I lived closer I would come to help too. :)
Why is she smiling?! :D
Ummmm... so about that chandelier........??
Hey, Smoo... she volutneered!! Maybe she was getting lonely without DB at home (he stayed out at our house for about 4 days) so she thought "If I want to see him, I have to go and help!"
And hey!! She's smiling because it's so much fun working on my house! :D
I'll have to take a pic of me and DH after we sand the damn drywall... we'll look exactly like this!! :p
Chandelier? What chandelier?!
I've been thinking... because we're moving the bedroom stuff in here immediately after the walls are primed (gotta tear out that room next!), maybe we should wait on purchasing the chandelier... or we could purchase it but hang it higher... don't want DH to hit his head (I'm a shorty, so won't have a problem LOL!)... I don't know! What do you think?
BTW... speaking of chandelier... I just took a look at the pretty ones I posted a few weeks back and I really, really like the first, whimsical one. DH likes the green leafed tiffany, though... :( hmmmmm... what to do?!
If I was your brother's GF, I'd dump him for making me do crappy work like that!! ;)
Why is she smiling?! :D
Ummmm... so about that chandelier........??
