has anyone ever had those companies come in and paint a tub, what did you think? i have heard they are pretty good and warranty is for 5 years...or has anyone done it themselves, i hear there is a paint made just for that, cant picture it, but my aunt lived in an apartment where the landlord did it and it looked like a brand new tub...ours is avocado green and of course we want the easy way out for now lol

It's so interesting to see how many other people have the same problem.

When my parents had this house the sink and toilet were changed to white while the aqua tub remains. My basement still has a peachy orange 3 piece set. It is a shame when you can't have all 3 pieces replaced with new, but over all I think I prefer having the mismatched bathroom. Besides nothing bugs me like a sink or toilet that is so old it never looks clean. For this house their was no choice when the toilet broke. there were no matches available so white was it.

Anyway, I think Obella is right saying to paint the walls out or use a floor length shower curtain. The other things I've considered is using something to surround the bottom of the tub like wainscotting which means a normal sized shower curtain can still be used.

As far as replacing, I was told it would be about $1000 for a basic remove and install of a new basic tub. About the same as a liner basically with the upside being a proper new tub, the down side is a lot of work plus possibly needing to replace the floor and any wall tile anyway. Of course we all know how that goes because you know it'll be new taps, new tile, new floors, new counter and basically redoing the whole place (another plus for the liners which seem to have a start and end for the price).

The other problem is when they build homes they frame a bit, install the bathtubs and then frame the rest of the house. That means there is often no way to get a bathtub in from the door to the bathroom. Getting an old one out isn't as big a deal as they just cut them apart in place and take them out in pieces.

I'll be glad to sell this house and it's coloured bathrooms. I can only hope to end up in one with a nice one in place.

so much i didnt think painting the tub ourselves would be a good idea, a friend of ours had thiers done proffesionally as you did jem....it lasted them a long time too...i just worry with kids dropping stuff in the tub if it would bang it up....i have considered your route jem, going with the insert.....okay now i do have a white toilet and white sink and of course the green tub....i think it would look better if all 3 were green lol however if i have to leave the green tub a while longer and do a mini makeover, what colors and so on would you suggest to hide away the green tub...thanks guys...right now the walls are lilac, (its got to go) and the cabinets are white
thank you and im prepared to rise to the challenge...i know i ask many questions at once with this house, lol but i keep notes so when the time comes i have them

Bathfitter, janetc.

We had our tub professionally painted about 10 years ago and it worked well for about 8 years. Must be really careful with cleansers. I think it cost about $200 at the time - I am sure it is more expensive now.

Last year we had Bathfitter come in and give us a price. We had them insert the tub, add walls and also a ceiling over the tub. I think it was around $2300. for the complete job. If I had just the tub insert, the cost would have been much lower.

I am sure that removing and replacing a tub would cost about the same, but I did not want to have to take out walls etc. to have the work done. This was an ideal solution for my situation.
I really like the result.

I had also heard it was a temporary solution. It is often done in condo. or rental places as a quick fix but I always thought it to be a bit unfair in the end.
Buying a new tub probably isn't the issue though, it's the cost and hassle of the installation that will probably end up costing a lot more than the tub itself.
Save up and get a new tub but in the meantime, work with what you have. I agree with Obella on that, it's so satisfying to make something beautiful that you used to think was ugly just by introducing another colour. I actually like Avocado Green with plum myself so that's what I'd do in a flash. White fixtures are very boring, anyone can work with those. Rise to the challenge Janetc :D

a blue tub wouldn't be that difficult to hide....if that is what you wanted to do.
Considering a shower curtain could camoflauge most of it.
I could also see going spa like, use the blue to its best advantage.
I once had a harvest gold fridge and stove in an apt. and painted the walls almost the same color...they blended right in and it turned out to be a great space.

Just yesterday my SIL was here and talking about her blue tub and what to do with it and my BIL said he herad you could paint it. I will tell them about your experiences and tell them not to do it. Taking the tub out I think is going to be a huge job and they really don't want to do it. Would you ever change the toilet and sink to white and leave the tub colored. She hates the blue.

I have looked into this when at my first house and with this house (the turquoise tub) and the answer is always the same. The DYI paint and pay the guys paint is a bad idea. Everyone I have spoken with tells me it ends up looking like crap in short order. the only type that works is when it is baked, but if you can get the tub out it's cheaper to throw it out if it's just a typical tub.

Someone had done the professional paint job in my first house and not warned me. I hit it with a bathtub cleaner and ruined the finish in one go. It also never looked right, always like a poor paint job.

I resolved that to do it, the only way is to get a liner done. It costs about $1000. The alternative is to see how much of an ordeal it is to get the old tub out. If it can be taken out without blowing out a wall, it's cheaper to get a new tub. You can buy a new tub for $200 plus so really, if you take a look at costs, it's often more efficient to just get a new tub installed.

about a year and a half ago. The paint does smell aweful, for quite a while. My tub has already started to peel. We'll be replacing the tub towards the end of this school year. My MIL had her tub and surround covered recently, and she loves it.

in the twonhouse, all I can remember is that it stank, and I mean stank, for days and days !

This was a quick fix for them, the rental/office lady had said we would get a new tub and we didn't, so they re-sprayed over an earlier spraying, and no, it did not hold up in my opinion for too long. The paint had started to peel round the drain, but the drain etc. was still the old one. However, it was the only tub or shower in the house, so it saw a lot of use !
