Really? Well at least she's honest but brave to admit that.
I've discovered I've packed on 10lbs over the Holidays and I only over ate on Christmas Day so I don't know how it's possible. I've been retaining a lot of water though which is not normal for me, swelling ankles, etc.
I think it might be the water softner but the guy that installed it said there were no worries about getting too much sodium that way. I told him I didn't want it connected to the ktichen tap but no, he wouldn't listen.
I have to agree....most family doctors are indeed biased against those of us who are overweight. I refuse to go to my current doctor for a check-up. I'm over-weight & know that I need to loose weight & exercise. Once I get there all she does is "nag" me about loosing weight, exercising etc. I have other health questions that never get addressed because of my weight issues. My husband is a runner (like our doctor) & is at a pretty good weight so he loves going for his check-up! I leave feeling depressed vowing never to go back again. I really need a check-up so I'm in the process of looking for a new family doctor.
I won't go into it all, but hearing even Oprah can't find a doctor who isn't automatically biased against fat people, who doesn't just automatically assume they are just overeating and not facing it, who won't look further to see what is up just rang true for me. It happens every day, to zillions of people particularly women with doctors who don't/won't listen to their patients and can't be bothered, so I hope if nothing else this really gives the medical community a bit of a kick from Oprah and those who will no longer put up with being patted on the head and told to 'get used to being hungry'.
Thank heavens for the women who have been through it, fighting to find out what is up for themselves, telling Oprah what was up so she could get some help. Without them, she still probably wouldn't know the cause. It was so obvious by what was happening to her face it was something like her thyroid going wonky.
The one shame is Oprah is now so gun shy about lawsuits she didn't mention those doctor's names. They deserved to be outed and lose their business and so do the others who really aren't doing their jobs properly. She's allowed to 'make' people, seems to me there are times she should be allowed to break them too.
What I think is a bit of a shame, unless they cover it later, is they really sort of glossed over the medical cause and went into the 'love' issue as fixing things. Had she not found out about that thyroid, she could forget the 'love' part as that won't make one ounce of difference to her weight without the physical cause being addressed. For all those people who are still trying to find out why their bodies are working against them when they are doing everything they are supposed to, it would be a big help to have that medical angle covered in a little more detail IMO. When Oprah, most famous woman on earth, she who has access to all, power as never seen before in one woman, couldn't find out on her own, how are others supposed to?
She's lucky. She's been through the throwing her hands up in frustration and giving up and found an answer to help her get back on track but what are the others who are still stuck in hopeless frustration with their doctors who aren't helping supposed to do?
A hypothyroid can make you feel sluggish, tired ,feeling cold ,puffiness,&depression but these are symptoms that we all experience at one time or another...Oprah said it was her viewers who suggested it may be her thyroid ,,,,I would think if you go to your DR. with all of these symptoms he would automatically have your thyroid checked:rolleyes:......I like Oprah alot because she makes you feel like she is your girlfriend & wants to share her problems & happiness with us.....She is a classic example of $$$ does not always bring happiness....She struggles with the same things that us poor folks do;)
Is this just the flavour/condition of the day[?/I] My friend who has a weight problem similar to Oprah's was told this was her problem by her naturopath type helpers. She was told this a couple of years ago and what she should do and take. Nothing has changed. Chocolates, not blue chips, are her addiction. Some people can't lose weight as easily as others. Genetics aren't always fair.
I find it very odd that 'Oprah's' 3-4 doctors missed the diagnosis. Pretty bad when she can afford the best.
Also when she said she finally had a 'team' of doctors all discuss her symptoms at a sit down meeting and came up with a diagnosis. Now she can afford that but the average American or even high income patients cannot afford that type of treatment. Believe me even with insurance in the US fees are astronanomical. Insurance covers the basics and not much more. She is one of the lucky few...and who would deny her that treatment.
Best of luck to those average people with thyroid condition. I hope you get great treatment.
If Bob Greene can get her to stop inhaling entire daily bags of organic blue corn chips - maybe ?
I had been under the impression that low thyroid was very rare. Even Dr Phil said that overweight caused by medical reasons like low thyroid was rare.
So now she has been diagnosed is she going to get thin again?
okay Am I the only one who finds it strange that Oprah's medical doctors failed on numerous occasions to check her thyroid ?
She changed 3 or 4 Doctors and realized that a rather common thyroid check was over looked ?
& then Dr Oz mentions how there is such a large epidemic of over or under active thyroid problems ?
Seems odd.
What is average middle America supposed to think if the TEAM of Oprah's doctors misdiagnose simple medical issues ?
Scary
