Someone gave me some tulip bulbs and I must admit I haven't planted any in years and can't remember when is the best time to plant them. Since we're having such a nice fall I was thinking maybe I have to wait later when it starts getting cooler, but how much cooler. Do I wait just before the ground freezes to plant them in, HELP!

One of my gardening neighbours adopted chicken wire years ago and it does help. What she discovered is the determined little creeps will pull up the edge and go underneath so she has fixed the edges. Some places I think she uses some long pins they can't pull out, other places good old heavy rocks.The wire is there permanently. I think you can even get chicken wire with sharp parts to keep cats off too but you may want to avoid that if any humans might have bare knees or feet in the area.
Thanks for the suggestions.......I'll probably plant them after the holiday weekend. We have lots of squirrels scurrying about all the time, so I don't know how long the bulbs will last under ground. I have heard about putting wire over the bulbs, maybe I'll have to do that to avoid the squirrel stealing them and putting them in my neighbour's garden :biglol:
I've seen people put a piece of chicken wire over the place where the bulbs are planted. It can likely be left and the bulbs will come up through the wire. It usually has large holes.
In zone 5 it should be ok to plant them anytime. now. I found that adding some blood meal to the earth around the bulbs deterred the squirrels.
Depends where you live. You can plant them now already, or wait until November. Just remember squirrels like eating tulip bulbs, so check on the net the best way to plant them, and leave no scent or tracks behind, lol.
