DH and I really want a large screen tv. Our living room is 25 x 10. If we get our 60" or 70" screen, do you think it will look odd in our space? The reason we are going big is that we are trying to buy things that will be useful in our new home a few years down the road. We hope to have a basement theatre in our new house and if we get anything smaller it will be too small and then we will have to re-buy in a few years...Right now we are doing with a small 20".

42" is the ideal size of TV for the livingroom, for the basement, get a projector, which is the ideal weapon for the basement ;)
They are dropping in prices everyday :)
bump for Janet C
phil...maybe you can move this into Free For All
The only place an oversized TV should be is in a media room. A TV should be in an armoire or other storage when not in use. I hate the look of the black screen -- it's so cold. I would never want a 60 inch TV let alone a 100 inch one -- yuck!
Glaswegian, I think, not sure, but the dlp is lighter than the lcd style. If it weren't for the size of our t.v. I could easily lift it by myself:)
Princess, your welcome:) actually, my dh does most of the research online and then talks my ear off about all of his new discoveries:D But it is a smart thing to do, this way you will be able to make a better decision as to what suits your needs. We shopped around alot and asked alot of the same questions in different stores to educate ourselves, talking to people who own the tv's is an excellent source. This way you're getting unbiased opinions of how that particular t.v. holds up as opposed to what 'salespeople' may be promoting.
In the end you will be alot happier with your decision. Happy hunting:D
Thanks for all the info...It was really helpful. Seems like you did a lot of research when buying your tv.
True....I know that site. Like you said, it depends on the space that you've got. My plasma won't be hanged on the wall, and to be honest with ya, it's not heavy at all. It's more or less the same weight as the LCD of the same size ( 42 " )
oopsi, I wrote the wrong model down for our t.v. its a 42" Grand Wega which is a lcd rear projection tv. There are pros and cons regarding all varieties of displays. Since the first plasma and lcd televisions hit the market a few years ago, the prices have reduced dramatically. The technology has also gotten better. There are no "clear cut" winners as far as which is better. Plasma has excellent colour reproduction but are very susceptible to screen burn in. They have excellent viewing angles and life expectancy, but are fragile and heavy. Lcds (not rear projection) have good colour reproduction, are very thin, lightweight excellent longevity and no screen burn in. They do have difficulty producing deep black images, a fixed resolution, and viewing angle may be narrow depending on the model. DLP rear projection tv's offer excellent colour reproduction, are lightweight, and have an excellent lamp life. They need a floor stand and are about 12-14" deep. The bulb in the rear projection models have a life expectancy of roughly 8 000 hours or 3 years (my dads is on year 3 and no problems so far) . The replacement cost of a bulb can be worked into the waranty as well. One more thing, don't buy a home theatre in a box. Even with a small space you can get decent small speakers. Its worth the investment if you want a good theatre sound to accompany your tv. So depending on budget, room size, furniture and audio setup, you really have a lot of options. Since we purchased our t.v. (a year ago) we have had no problems. Great viewing at different angles and awesome sound. Its like you're right there in the movie!:D
This is a site my dh recommends for any help...he kinda lives there...

thanks for that...DH was wondering about the difference...
On the issue of LCD VS PLASMA, read all about it here, and see why PLASMA is the one to get
http://www.plasmatv.com/plasma-lcd.php
this is strictly an analogy.....
if you wanted a sports car, you'd probably get what suits your lifestyle now...you wouldn't get a mini van because you planned children in a few years.
I agree with some of the others.....go with what looks great in your room, and that you both agree is a decent size....
and get the larger one when you move in the future.
If you plan on a larger space in the future, this tv could be in your future bedroom or den....
and I would think, like said, the way technology is advancing, it might be smart to wait
either way........good luck !! ....and good movie watching!!
Sure is sweetie pooh ;) Perfect for the living, not the basement.

That's a 42" right?
Taest-watched this one yesterday, @ futureshop, and @ $2300, with HDMI capabilities, it's a good buy

I think that may be a good idea...I'll see what DH has to say about that when he gets home.
Thanks Condogirl for the original idea.
Her indoors gets the same treatment too when we are at computer fairs or gadget shops. I think it's flat out rude to be honest, and I always just walk away and leave them to talk to her when she is asking the questions.
I know better not to treat people like that, as helping people solve and answer tech questions, is what I do for work serving over 4 thousand employees in one building.
I would definately listen to the advice that another poster stated. When you move into a house in a few years time, you will be needing a few TV's. So get a TV that would look good in your condo now and then you can use it it another room in your house later and save the huge one for the future.
It's just a stereotype! I'm glad you did something about it though.
It was wried, since I was buying as an xmas present for DF.... I accually did a lot of reseach and knew what I was talking about. I hate being talked down to, when I more than likely knew more about the TV than the sales guy did.
Isn't that weird! Most men should know we make the final say in the house...j/k :)
That is what I did Princess, mostly cause every time we went to a store I couldnt get the sales guys to talk to me, even if I asked a question they would direct their respons to my DF, I got so pissed at one store I got the manager and complained. Then I tore up the sale document and told them they were losoing a 3k sale becuase of the sales guys rudeness to me.
actually have a 60" or 70" tv and if so...would you be able to post a picture so I can get a sense of what it looks like in a home setting. Thanks in advance.
I think I'll leave the decision for DH to make. He definitely knows more about this stuff than I do.
Yes they do, but as you might know, the pictures aren't as clear as plasma, and the DLP take up a lot of room. With the price of projectors as cheap as they are now, you are better off with that.
just my 2 pence
I am not referring to an LCD tv, but a rear projection tv. They come very large. I think the largest on the market right now is about 70", but they are looking to release and 100" one in the near future. Now that would be awesome!
They told us that at the store, but I don't see why they would lie about it. Apparently, the older models were made where the bulb had to be replaced and that cost a few hundred dollars.
I do know we have done that, my DF has every know electronic thing, including the new XBox 360.. Suround sound and all that stuff... I leave that up to him.
To get a better picture, make sure you hook them up with a COMPONENT cable or HDMI, if your dvd player or surround sound supports that
LOL, I cant remember the name... LOL, I found though that they were pretty similar, once you played with the colour/bightness settings.
Which is what we are doing, and what I said in the above post. Which plasma did you get?
We just bought a 42 inch plasma TV and we love it. Its the prefect size for living room. Princess we have plans to do a media room in our basment when we buy a house too, we are going to go for drop down screen with a projector on the ceiling. It will be hooked to the cable and a DVD player. THe 42 inch will be the living room TV... Well this is the plan atleast... LOL
