i'm obsessing about black mulch! I saw it in a bed today and wow, I am thinking about pulling out my plain cedar mulch, moving it to my back flower beds and laying down the black. it looks sooo good! does anybody have this? It's supposed to resist fading, just wondering if this is true?
I have dark gray concrete landscaping borders and went with a moon garden theme... all white flowers with some lime green mixed in and lots of green folliage. Hubby is going to freak out on me if I do this... considering I just layed more mulch down a month ago.
needless to say that if I do this I will be doing it all my by my lonsome:)

I have the black mulch. We put it on the gardens last year. When we get our mulch we usually get a couple of yards dropped off from our local landscaping place. I think this might be a bit cheaper for you if you need a lot of it. We just cover it with a tarp until we use it up.
Love the black. But I miss the smell of my brown mulch. But the black looks sharp!
nicely chilled, dry white wine is also good for those post-gardening aches :D
Get out the Advil
lol! I adviled and a hot tub. I'm heading out to finish:)
Well, I'm working on it! I trucked most of my mulch from the front of the house to the back beds today. They needed more mulch anyways. I can't wait to see the end results. I can tell already just with there being black dirt there that the black mulch will look good. I planted a shade garden today under the stairs of our deck. (walk out). I planted hostas, astilbe and some dogwoods that like shade. I trucked some of my frontyard mulch to this spot too:) We're getting thunderstorms right now so the moisture will be good for the new plants. its amazing how much excercise gardening is!
It is new to us here! I have seen two houses in town that went with it. It does look so rich! I hope it doesn't fade! It seems to be the thing. :)
I went and bought the black mulch at canadian tire. It was the same price as the superstore mulch but comes with a colour fade guarantee and has 30% more in a bag. I can't wait to be finished with the garage sale tomorrow and saturday so that I can can get it done! :bliss:
I've never used mulch but I sure love the look of it in black. I might just have to try some! I've been buying bags of Black Earth from Canadian Tire since about a year ago to keep the dirt looking dark.
Hmmm. That is very interesting. And I can see her logic.
We use black mulch in our very front garden. I hope that because I have perrineals established, the heat won't affect too much. We laid the black mulch back in late April and the new plants seem to be thriving there...
The black mulch is a really nice contrast to the green of the garden. It makes everything pop.
I had what we called Sea Soil at my last house and it was black soil that had lots of sticks in it. I loved it looked so good and when it started to fade at all we just watered and it came right back. It looks so sharp and fresh and the flowers and shrubs really pop.
You can buy black mulch at the Superstore.
thanks pearl:) I don't think that I want to entirely sacrifice function for durability though. the mulch that I have on my beds has done wonders for the quality of my soil. I like that it breaks down and don't mind adding to it every year. I just wish it would hang onto it's colour more. Maybe this black will?
Dianne, I actually found mine at superstore! they had two different kinds, one was a recycled mulch and didn't say what the mulch was made of, the other was dyed black cedar. I went with the cedar. It was only $7 for a large bag.
I love the look of this mulch. Do you just buy it at a regular nursery?

I have it my flower beds and really love it. It does fade a bit but depends a lot of how much sun you get in that area - on one bed it did fade to that specific ceday grey by the end of the summer but on the one where there is less sun it stayed quite dark. i have mostly mauve and purple flowering plants there and it looks really good.
Well, hubby just got home and actually thought that it was a great idea! Who knew! So I am going to tackle this on sunday (we are having a garage sale friday and saturday otherwise I'd be out there tomorrow). I will post photos once it's in!
Here's a photo of how the black mulch makes flowers pop!

I actually really love the daffodils in this photo! I didn't think that I was a daffodil kind of girl but I think that I will plant some bulbs next year.
