Vent hood and cabinet

Hi,

We just moved into a house and are slowing doing some 'personalisation' with the house. I want to replace the white aging hood with a better hood as well as stainless steel.

The kitchen currently has a 18" high cabinet and 6" white hood over a gas range. Above the cabinet, there is a 6" high bulk head with big crown moulding. It looks like a coffer ceiling with the crown moulding. So we don't want to touch the moulding and the bulk head.

I think I have two options with the hood, but wanting get different ideas or reinforcement, etc.

1) Get either a 6" or 9" under-cabinet type of hood. 9" shows more stainless steel which I like. Either option stills leave me with enough clearance above the gas range. Thinking of the Vent-a-hood Emerald line like this http://www.ventahood.com/Hood%20Styles/Under%20Cabinet/SL9.htm This option is the least work and nothing special (just a replacement for us).

2) Rip out the cabinets above the hood now and get a higher stainless steel hood for dramatic look. Like this one http://www.ventahood.com/Design%20Ideas/Wall%20Mount%20Emerald%20Series.htm (without the column the hood is 18" high). I like this option more, but I think I run into a snag

2a) If we just go with an 18" high hood, then we might have a gap of just dry wall between our current tiled backsplash and the bottom of the 18" high hood. Dh refuses to redo anything but the hood. Being a resale, we don't have the same tiles to complete it off with this option.

2b) I'm going to cost it out to see if I can order a 6" high stainless steel column (similar to the one in the second link) to bring the hood and column down to the same level as now (24" high total). Do you think this would look odd under a bulk head? Will this ok?

2c) Or, retrofit my 18" cabinet to about 6-9" high and then put the 18" high stainless steel hood under. How hard is it to chop the cabinet and doors in half? LOL Have anyone done this before? I plan to paint the oak cabinet into a dard espresso shade so an imperfection can be covered up. Think this is too crazy to attempt? this is just a spacer anyway, right?

I would love to have any suggestions you may have. And also tell me which of my plan is not totally out-of-this-world crazy. Thanks

Tam
