I have read that vinyl windows are best for any weather condition since they can stand up to the elements. Is it true? If anyone has done replacing old aluminum windows, I wouldbe grateful for knowing what brand of vinyl window is the best value in Ontario. What about http://www.clerawindows.com/windowsI heard about Home depot also. Any suggestions?

As far as I know vinyl windows could easily withstand harsh weather conditions, keeping your home warm and comfortable for long years, so I don't see why you couldn't get them. If you want to really be sure of your choice though, you should ask Gilkey advice, they are the real windows professionals!

Vinyl framing materials prevent energy loss, don't require sealing or painting, and  much cheaper than wood. Metal windows  tend to be the worst for energy. It is work, but worthwhile. Your house looks better and feels better. Your next round of wintertime energy bills are 10% lower. Your house is quieter.

I just love Vinyl stuffs, recently I remodelled my backyard with vinyl fences and just loving the new look. Best thing about vinyl stuffs are they have high durability and have great looks. Vinyl window with shutters or some craft works looks great and at the same time very durable and lasting.

Kingsteel, you are right, even vinyl fencing looks really cool for your garden or backyard and they add a sense of style to your outdoors. And the best part is that they are durable.

Vinyl windows are good and last long. To enhance the beauty of these windows you could use Shutters on them. Shutters are better than any other type of window covering, they are timeless as they never go out of fashion and they offer great lighting and visibility control. You can choose from options like Polyclad wood shutters, wood blinds and wood faux blinds.

While Vinyl windows perform great as insulator and it's true that vinyl windows don't require painting they are not as rigid as wood, thus they shrink in cold weather expanding in hot weather but because PVC is a sturdy plastic compound the frame will not crack, mold, split, or attract bugs. The most recognizable features of a window are the glass (of course), and the framing.  The framing material, which not only makes up the perimeter frame, but the surrounding frames of the operable parts of a window as well, is typically made of Wood, Aluminum or Vinyl. The Advantages and Benefits of Vinyl Windows

  • Energy efficient
  • Cuts noise dramatically
  • No stucco damage
  • No condensation
  • Easy tilt-in cleaning
  • No painting
  • No maintenance
  • Rigid grade vinyl
  • Beautifies your home
  • Full screens
  • Child-resistant safety locks
  • Assumable Lifetime Warranty

Vinyl windows are well suited for all weather conditions. Wood is also good, but the upkeep is a royal pain.

Where you buy them is the key because it seems there are 1000s of companies out there that make them. Brand names, like Pella, will cost more. Home Depot and Sears and Lowes can also offer good windows. Choose a company you know and make sure you check for references.

Also important are the people who install the windows. Some do a great job. Sloppy ones you do not want. Again ask questions and make sure you are comfortable with your decision.

It would be great if Consumer Reports did a test on windows and rated them for us, but again, too many out there. Good luck - you are only going to do this once so make sure you do it right.
