So I was sent a super special care package today from Dreamer today - HER DAD!!!
Papa Dreamer called ahead and made an appointment to visit someone he was told was a Scarlett Birdie!!! He arrived, chivalrous and remarkably on time bearing gifts of Cheesecake, Fresh Figs, and other numerous goodies - he knows the way to a girl's heart!!
We spoke a little french (He and DH bonded over both being from Montreal and loving the Canadiennes) and unbeknownst to me his engineering firm did some of the preliminary work on the Distillery - small world!!! He has myself and most of my staff so charmed that we are all now willing to pack things up and move to Alberta!!!
It was an honour to have met such a wonderful, thoughtful man - and now I know why Dreamer has the biggest brain of anyone I have ever ALMOST met!

Jainey, I think you have hit upon something!!! It is clearly a beet conspiracy, orchestrated by lovers of white bread, clean fingers, and undyed shirts!! Perhaps this extends beyond the bounds of the New LIskeard fall fair, and is indicative of a larger, more sinister plot to rid the world of red tubers! What's next??? Radishes and heritage carrots??? Egads, I must fight the good fight! I will continue to show beet bread and strive to open the minds of bigoted judges and old-fashioned bread eaters everywhere!!!!
Or perhaps, I'll just share the recipe. :-)
Rustic Beet Bread (Can't be a family secret, I made it up last year!)
1 1/2 lbs raw beets, chopped
3/4 c water from cooking beets
2 tbsp yeast
3 3/4 c flour
4 tsp salt
2 tbsp olive oil
Cook beets. Allow to cool and dry.
Stir yeast into 1/2c of tepid beet water. Allow it to rest and turn creamy.
Place beets in bowl of mixer and slightly mash them. Add the disolved yeast and the olive oil and mix.
Using dough hook on mixer, at low speed, add the flour and the salt. Mix on low for 2-3 minutes and the increase speed and mix for 10min.
Cover the bowl and allow to rest for 20-30 min.
Turn dough out on floured surface and shape into a torpedo. Cover with a towel and rest for 20 minutes.
Turn the dough out into oven preheated to 375 onto the baking sheet (that is preheated as well). A bakers peel works well for this task. Bake for 45-50 minutes.
The idea for the bread is originally from Julia Child's book Baking with Julia. It is an adaptation of her Rustic Potato Bread.
it was discrimination! Beets have long been looked down upon by the general public and I say you stand up and bring that beet bread back to the fair every year, until they *beg* for it! *grin* I sure bet it's good. Are you sharing the recipe or is it family secret?
Then the mistake was mine!!!! Of course the scarlett birdie can discuss the visits from the northern loon!!!
Speaking of baking and of looniness, I believe I mentioned to you (and now to everyone else) that I make a fabulous beet bread that is a wild red colour and tastes delicious. Well, my crazy competitive side has reared it's head - I came second at the local fall fair in the special breads category - TO A LOAF OF REGULAR WHITE BREAD!!!!! I am P*** OFF!!!!
(I"ve been grumbling about this for two days, and DH says if I don't stop mentioning it, I'm not allowed to enter next year, so now I'm complaining to a new audience!!)
your visit silly!!!
I was protecting your privacy!!
DH is STILL talking about the Bonjour Brioche Tart you brought!!!! The cherries were BEYOND fresh!!!!!!!
sounds like a lovely man!!! What a great visit!
Now, I'm a little hurt though! Cheesecake must rate higher than cherry tarts, to get a mention on the forum!!! :-) I'll have to remember that!

I am green. How lucky you are to have met him. I hope Dreamer is lurking. Hi there, wherever you are.
only my second time having them - I am a bonafide Fig Newton-a-holic though!!
It was beyond thoughtful!!!
He was also gracious enough to take a present back to Dreamer.... I can't wait to find out what she thinks!!! It has nothing to do with Teal & Persimmon... however - okay I can't say anymore in case she reads!
That is so thoughtful and adorable. What a sweet papa to do that for his daughter! Love that.
BTW.....fresh figs are my all time favourite fruit! Could eat them day and night and not get sick of them.
it will probably be me showing up on her doorstep unexpectedly!
Perhaps next time Dreamer heself will be wrapped and delivered in person.
