Vote for Obama's puppy!!

smoodgie's picture

When Obama said that he's going to get his girls a puppy, I was like, you HAVE to adopt a puppy from a shelter.... and it looks like I'm not alone!! :)

You can vote for what kind of puppy Obama should get -- and one of the options is a mutt from a shelter!!! And the mutt is WAY in the lead!!! :clapping: Over 50,000 votes -- the next closest is at 18,000.
If McCain had won, people would have a lot more to be concerned about than what kind of dog he'd get!! ;)
It's curious just how many people did vote for him and how many states gave him a majority though. It's like 2 different mindsets in the same country. Yet you never hear about Louisiana wanting to seperate or anything.

I would think that if the puppy was promised for the girls, then the President Elect would want to choose something small for the girls....JMO.

I saw an interview with the entire future new White House family and one of the girl's said that "Daddy does not like small dogs" !

No toy or miniature poodle for that family.

It's definitely refreshing that everyone is so interested in Obama's dog pick. Maybe it's a sign that people feel confident that he's going to make things better :)

With the country swimming in an economic crisis and California disappointing everyone with its blatant discrimination, the question on everyone's mind at President-elect Obama's first press conference was what kind of dog the First Family would adopt.

Keeping true to his endearing promise to daughters Malia and Sasha to get them a puppy if elected, the Prez-elect said "We have two criteria that have to be reconciled" - the first is that Malia is allergic to dogs and the second is that Obama wants to rescue a dog from the shelter.

So while the family needs a hypoallergenic dog, the only kind of dog available at a shelter might be "a mutt…like me."

The statement revealed Barack's more human side, and as the United States of America is a "melting pot" of different races and different cultures, we're all sort of mutts!

Poodles are generally considered more hypoallergenic, although everyone's allergies are unique, and Malia will probably have to see how she reacts to individual dogs. Additionally, there are many breed-specific shelters to rescue from.

There! Problem solved!

My posting of the 'elitist' comment was not implied that all who choose pure breeds are such; & apoligize if it were taken in that context. It was better explained in a post upthread (poster Arizona, I believe) thank you.

Heard or saw on CNN that they are getting a Toy Poodle....at least that was on the scrool on the bottowm of the screen.

I think the elitist comment was more regarding Obama and not anyone else who owns a purebred. I feel sorry for this guy because everyone is watching him with baited breath for him to perform miracle after miracle or to turn water into wine. If he makes one perceived wrong move the masses will turn on him poor guy. They have been building him up so they can tear him down.

I also think a recused dog is a good idea but just because we have a purebred dog and made that decision on purpose I don't think makes me an "elitist" I just happen to like that kind and it is what we wanted for DH's hunting that he does and loves. I also think because of his daughters allergies she should be careful and pick one that will not bother her.

Anyone see John Stewart last night? He was quite funny talking about it being barely a day since an historic election with all that implies, and what does the news switch to but talk about getting a puppy. Drop the significance of the election, the war, the economy, the President needs a puppy. I like that little touch of humanity somehow.

As much as I would like to see his daughter get her wish of a designer pure breed labradoodle, I think he would want to avoid being labled or further perceived as 'an elitist'

Politics can be learned at a very young age:rolleyes:

Unfortunately, I think a lot of the White House dogs of the past spent most of their time in kennels and were probably allowed freedom for photo ops.

There have been plenty of piddles on carpets over the years at the White House.

I vaguely remember Barbara Walters preparing to do an interview with the new White House family and the dog piddled on the carpet in the Oval Office.

It was probably Barney !

& they have dog walkers and such in the big house !!

& the decor changes quite often with the new family in - out with the old decor !

This morning I saw a funny TV clip of a journalist try to befriend the White House Barney and he sure showed his teeth (the dog that is - not the journalist)

Can you imagine how many puppies have been offered to them by now? it sure would be nice if they could find a way to show they rescued one though.

BTW I was watching something on the Presidents one time and a dog is almost mandatory. Apparently since one of the Roosevelt's they have been considered the best for photo opps so every one who comes into office without one, gets one pretty quick.

No doubt Oprah will find them a dog. Not that long ago, she had a show devoted to PAWS - a Chicago no kill rescue/shelter organization. They had all sorts of dogs. Mutts & designer breeds !

He certainly will get a lot of flack if he goes directly to a private breeder.

A pure bred or designer dog can be found at shelters.

His daughter already has a longing for a labradoodle and she does have allergies so this could make a good selection/breed for the family.

Labradoodles are sooo cute too!!!
You're right though...shelters should be checked out. I'm sure there's lots of loving doggies there too!

Oh...I know I should have voted for the mutt....I really should have!!

But...after 11+ yrs with my Labrador, I can't imagine a sweeter dog!!!
So-of course I had to go with the Lab;)
(and I know there's lots of sweet ones out there!) I grew up with weiner dogs and Mocha has converted me. I will always have a loyal, loving Lab in my life:)
Such a wonderful family dog and great with kids.
