Finally after a lot of issues we had with our developer, FINALLY our builder got to break ground today and actually started to build our house.
Well part of the driveway anyways. It is exciting even to see that much so I guess I will be super excited when I see anything past the foundation. I will post a few pics. Not much to see but hope you enjoy anyway!

Thanks jenjen, I am looking forward to taking indoor pics as well. I am getting impatient, I want to move in and get out of this apartment!! I can't wait to see it because I have been horrible at visualizing it.
Shop...the house looks fantastic....i'm so happy for you...glad everything is going along smoothly...can't wait to see interior pics too...keep 'em coming...
Hey everyone, here are some more pics of the progress. The siding is almost completed and the front veranda is started. It shouldn't be too long now. My big dilemas now are the shutters (posted question in D&D) and kitchen cupboard color/stain. I just cannot make the decison!
We have been having good weather so it has been going along smoothly. Although now that it is roof tight, I guess it doesn't matter as much. The electricians were there the other day and I never knew it would be so difficult to figure out where I wanted lights and outlets :) So now, that is out of the way
The kitchen and the shutters are now the main focus.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
We built over the winter so DH would bring coffee and Tim Hortons but the builder told us right up front NO BEER he does not allow it on site. He didn't want a WCB claim because of beer. I think DH also took pizzas for them for lunch he also told them ahead of time so they didn't bring a lunch.
Progress is awesome - love the french doors!
During the warmest months we found that the crew(s) weren't a very hungry bunch and ended up purchasing a couple of coolers that we filled iwth pop, water and the like. The other we filled with deli type sandwiches.
I have to admit there were a few times DH did add a few beer. The coolers were always dropped off at the contractor's trailer and he doled out the goodies at his discretion. We picked them up from him and refilled the next week.
When it was cooler we contacted a local food/catering truck that visits job sites and had the crew choose their own lunch.
KFC sounds just fine; it's the thought that counts and they really do appreciate it.
Keep the updates coming!
regards,
sweetie
There are only two guys, believe it or not, so it won't get too pricey. Thanks for the compliments France and PaulD.
France: Yes it is a center hall plan. Quite symetrical. I am a fan of balance :)
PaulD: I loved the garage idea as soon as I saw the plan. And luckily it was possible on our land. Thanks for the food tips!
gives a much nicer facade (not always possible of course with regular sized lots)
and a garage with curtains always looks so much classier ;)
for lunch in a heatwave, nothing with mayo so skip the KFC potato salad :)
popsicles, cold gatorade/juices/water, sliced watermelon, icecaps (depends how many workers, could get pricey lol) - no beer of course since it dehydrates
thanks for sharing those pics
shopaholic,
you're house is beautifully set in the woods it looks perfect there. the shape is lovely too and is that a centre hall plan? good luck with everything and of course keep the pics coming!:D-
Here I am again, posting new pics. The shingles and windows are in now. I have a few pics from the other day where two of the windows aren't in yet but they are now. The vinyl and veranda and shutters should be on tomorrow so I am looking forwards to seeing the "finished" look.
Pic #1: Front of house taken from almost the end of the driveway
Pic #2: Closer up of front. The front door can still be painted by our builder but we are not sure if we are going to do it just yet.
Pic #3: Back of house. Left hand side window is the family room, garden doors is where we may put a small kitchen table and the right window is over the sink. Area is all open
Pic #4: Looking from master bedroom through walk in closets into the master bath
Pic #5: Looking from living room into family room.
Sweetie and dbd what kind of food did you guys bring to the contrator and crew? I am bringing something out tomorrow but with the heat and them being on site, I am not sure what would be appropriate. I have been bringing muffins, donuts, water juice etc but tomorrow I am bringing them lunch. So I am stumped. Was thinking KFC? Any ideas?
Well I should go for now, will be back soon, hopefully tomorrow, with siding pictures!!
did that too. Every Friday we supplied lunch for whatever 'crew' happened to be at our house. It was worth every penny! All the sub contractors appreciated it. They spent extra time explaining things to us, didn't look dismayed when we showed up (it was often) and in the end built us a beautiful home.
On the other side there was another family building 2 lots down - same contractor. The Mrs was very demanding and unfortunately demeaning at times. There was lots of eye rolling and shaking heads from the crew. There was no overtime spent on that home.....a smile and pizza goes a long way.
regards,
sweetie
The progress is wonderful, you must be thrilled.... :p
Yes treats for the work men. I do not know about where you are but here is a heat wave and the outdoor workers are having a tough time with the heat...Even fruit juices and some fruit would be welcome I would think.
I am anxiuos to see the rest when you post more pics. I had Sears here delivering awhile back and offered them juice pacs...and bottled water. They were so thankful they offered to put my old sofa in the garage for me. They are not obliged to do that. Costs so little to help them out.
Yes, a great tip. We have been taking them out water and coffee and whatever else they wanted. They really do enjoy it. Now that I am not working as much, I am going to do it more often.
It is going up quite fast, we are so excited. If I can be in by the end of August, I would be so happy!
someone mentioned this to me after I needed it, but maybe it will work for you. When they had their house built, whenever they went out to the site they took treats for the crew. It might have been coffee or muffins or cookies or whatever but they felt the crew did a little extra, took a little extra care for them because of it. Sheesh, for the expense of a house, it just might be worth seeing if some food helps.
It's amazing how fast houses go up isn't it.
We live in an apartment now so I think anything will seem big to us! My fiance's bonus room will be about 3/4 the size of our apartment or more so I think we will enjoy the space.
I will be sure to bring those sandwiches, because I know I will have a tough time making decisions. Thanks! :)
Here are some more pics. Not too much updated, just the eave on the roof was put up. The garage roof is now on but we did not take pics yet. Plus we weren't out today and I am hoping more got done. Maybe I will post even more progress tomorrow.
of course we remember you, silly question !! :D
You must be living in a mass of catalogues for taps, sinks, cabinets, flooring etc., but I am sure it will turn out really well.
1900 sq ft seems a decent size to me - what do you have right now ?? I am sure you will find it big enough when you get in !
Have fun and take sandwiches with you when you go to Home Depot lol - you could be there a while if you're anything like me !
Thanks Dawn! Yes there have been quite a few decisions to be made and a lot more to come. I am looking forward to it though. And I am sure I will be on here asking away as well :)
It's very exciting to see your house come together. Congratulations! I've heard it can be hectic making all the decisions involved in building a house, but I would love to be in your shoes doing just that!
Here are the pics I couldn't add earlier.
I have lagged in updating with my house pictures. I have been away from the net for awhile. But for those who remember, here are some more pics of the house.
Builder says it should be roof tight by Tuesday!
Gettin close!
EDIT** Ok well I cannot post pics at work but I will as soon as I get home.
so exciting...give me more...i want more...pictures that is....:D
The house is a decent size, about 1900 sq feet. Plus the bonus room which is about 400 give or take. And then there is the basement. We are kind of nervous because we have never had a house before and we don't know if when we get in, will we be disappointed because we thought it would be bigger? I think it will be fine. :)
It is very peaceful there. We are looking forward to it. My mother is nervous that we are so "isolated" because I am a true city girl. I think I will love it. Hopefully I can get a better shot of the actual property soon. It is all torn up now so there is not much use.
Thanks for the comments, Foxxy!
Oh how exciting...to see the actual form of the house now. The lot is beautiful so serene and peacfeul. I love to see your pics...brings back many memories. How large is the house ? :p
Hi everyone! Well the foundation is in the the well is dug. This week, we should have the framing up. Here are the pics so far :)
The concrete columns (covered in cardboard) are going to be what our porch sits on. I thought for awhile that it was the actual porch colums, thankfully they are not.
The windows in the last picture are the ones in the basement.
Can't wait to post more pics. Still looks small to me :)
The salt is so that our cupboards will never be bare, the coal is so our home will always be warm and the coin is so we'll always have money.
way...keep 'em coming...lol...i'll be waiting for them....:D
that is a wonderfully romantic thing to do. Maybe we should do something like that for good luck ;)
The foundation will be poured monday. The footings (?) went in today.
I will definitely keep the pictures coming every step of the way as long as you guys/gals don't get too bored ;)
Why salt ,coal and gold coin does that have a special meaning?
that reminds of a navy tradition where we put a gold coin under the mast step before the mast goes in... it's for luck...
In our place we buried some salt, coal and a gold coin under our front porch.
I'd be telling a fib if I did not admit to being slightly jealous...breaking ground is awfully exciting. I will share a neat thing that happened to me with my first house and the pouring of the foundation. My partner and I had been together for 12 years and he threw twelve pennies into the hole before the foundation was poured as a sign of good luck...(it was awfully romantic at the time...)
All the best...now that you have shared your digging pics...I feel no fear to show mine when it finally gets dug!
Good luck.
It looks like such a beautiful lot with all that forest!
You're one big step closer to reaching your dream....by the time you know it you'll be having such fun looking for things to fill it up with to reflect your personality......how exciting!
