Weekend Bedroom Makeover

I love to create the impossible. I sewed and installed these window treatments in one and a half days. The entire treatment including the last four handles for the dresser cost approximately $150.00. The dresser is a thirty-five year old french provincial that was really run down. It cost $20.00 to redo. I also designed and made the queen size bed and headboard which is covered in suede. The bed and sheers around it cost approximately $300.00 to make. I'd love to get into interior design but I'm not sure how to go about it out here in Cambridge. Anyone have any ideas?

I saw a very similar headboard in Canadian House and Home Magazine once, some time ago, and thought - gee I can make one of those and it wouldn't cost me $2000 either - so I did! You should see the one I made for myself - it's on "Another Weekend Bedroom Makeover". :bliss: :bliss:

Can I ask ... why did you choose the Tremclad paint for the dresser .... had you tried an oil paint on another project. I am about to tackle painting my dining room table but want to get it right .... advice please?

The valance is 1/8" MDF painted the same flat black as the dresser. It is attached to the ceiling and the walls with 6 "L" brackets. I used it to cover the curtain rod and the top of the wall above the windows. I wanted to do something a little more finished but the entire budget was only $150.00 for everything and the MDF was the only thing that fit into the budget. Good thing too - I came in 37 cents under budget! :)

Is the black above the window a cornice? How did you make it or how did you make whatever it is?

pat yourself on the back and put your feet up! Gads you did a lot of work - did you sleep? I do like the finished results MUCH better than the plastic trash bag window treatment. LOL

I sanded everything lightly and used 2 coats of flat black metal paint (Tremclad) with a small foam roller for the large flat surfaces. This is oil base so you need a lot of ventilation (not a winter project!). I didn't use a primer. Then it needs to clear coated with at least 2 coats of flat polyurethane to protect the finish. The brushed silver handles were bought at Rona and the curve really goes with the curves in the dresser. I love to recycle and reuse - the results are sometimes better than buying new.

Wow! Looks great, so peaceful with the fabric above the bed and the light panels between the windows. :clapping:

How did you redo the dresser? New paint and handles? What paint and/or primer did you use? I'm trying to convince my DH to redo our old one, so the more info I can get, the better :D
