Our house isn't air-conditioned and it's not too bad since we live on a shady street. But I'm thinking of buying a ceiling fan for our bedroom, just to get the air moving. Any hints? We've already got the place for it since there used to be a light fixture in the ceiling and I know I'll have to get the 'ceiling-hugger' type (close to the ceiling with no pole) and no light fixture. The bedroom is pretty big -- it runs the full width of the house. What do I need to know before I go shopping? And is a ceiling fan really worthwhile?

Thanks everyone -- it's good to hear that they actually work. And I never would have thought of a remote but it's exactly what we'll need.
We have one in our bedroom and it's fabulous.

ceiling fans with remotes...one in my family room and one in the guest bedroom....highly recommend it...it's great...ours are mounted with a bracket on the wall but alot of times it sits on the coffee table with all the other gazillion remotes...with it i can turn it on and off...i can turn on just the fan or just the light...slow down the fan or dim the lights or all on at once..well worth finding one with the remote...i got mine from Home Depot it even came with a bonus one of those tall lights....
if you go to good lighting person with the measurements of your room, they will be able to tell you what blade size is best, but if $ are an issue and you just want some extra help moving air, buy one you like.
Remote may not be a bad idea, our bedroom is small and fan is over the bd, I can't reach the strings - really painful having to stand on the bed in the morning before I can get light on to find stuff in my drawers etc. lol...
Ours does work like a charm though - last house we had was a townhouse with a high stair opening, and we had a small one in there, but it still moved a decent amount of air around.
ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and kitchen...wouldnt be without them. Im not sure what to recommend, other than quiet and i too prefer the hugger ones....with the size of your bedroom i would certainly go with a larger blade one
good luck

We live in the country surrounded by trees, so we have some natural cooling effects, but on the hottest nights I do appreciate our bedroom ceiling fan... look for ultra-quiet operation and a remote control would be nice. Also, I personally prefer a very simple, plain white fan so it blends into the ceiling a bit (the only exception would be in a tropical situation, where I love the big fans with woven blades, etc.... JMO or maybe an industrial-looking one in a loft setting).
