What to do with sorrel

I have a sorrel plant that's growing like crazy -- any ideas what I can do with it?? I have a recipe for sorrel soup, but I'd have to make a double batch every day to use up just a small amount of it!!

Sorrel is pretty much interchangeable with spinach, so recipes with spinach would be good.

I really like the website ... recipe link.

the web page is a bit messy but they have some great recipes...copycat recipes too!

when you get to their home page....look on the right hand side about half way down the screen is a big red box "recipe search" under that is "find a recipe"..."enter title and/or ingredient"

I tried out sorrel and got 33 hits....

good luck!

Yes, Polkadot Rhapsody sounds MUCH better!!!!

OK, I'll get the recipe for you -- maybe I'll post it on the Recipes board, in case anyone else is interested. BTW, I make the same soup with spinach in the winter when I don't have fresh sorrel, and it tastes just as good. I like to add a bit of lemon juice to my sorrel soup to give it a bit more zing, which I double for spinach soup seeing as it doesn't have the lemony flavour that sorrel has.

Could I get your recipe, please? My impressions are derived from my MIL's sorrel soup and it was crappy...

Bloody Butcher is sort of a turn-off, but it's horribly apropos -- the burgundy is all in splotches and splatters on the leaves...if they had given it another name (Polkadot Rhapsody????), it would have nicer associations...

Can you describe your plant to me. Is it an annual? How long have you been growing it? What conditions? I'd love to try this plant, where did you find it. And I know it because my background is West Indian, my mom used to make a type of sorrel drink.. I found a recipe for you: http://www.recipecottage.com/caribbean/sorrel-drink.html

According to that page too, you can dry the sorrel and store it longer. Good luck!

karenm, sorrel is a perennial. A friend of mine bought seeds a couple of years ago and planted them in her garden. Last summer, she gave me a small clump from her plant. So this spring is the first time I've actually had it come back. And I h ave to say, it's growing like a weed!! I didn't want it in the backyard with the dogs (in case they ate it or dug it up), so it's in the flower garden in the front yard, which faces south. Although I think it gets quite a bit of shade form the big maple tree next door.

I don't think it's particularly easy to find. But I would guess that maybe a large nursery or mail order catalogue would sell the seeds, and maybe plants.

Wow, I never would have thought of making a drink from sorrel!! I may have to try that :) Thanks for the link :) I didn't realize it can be dried -- I'll have to try that too!!

Pearl_girl, do you have a recipe for Italian Wedidng Soup?? I've looked, but haven't had much luck finding a recipe.

homebody, you don't like sorrel soup!? Maybe you need to try another recipe -- the one I have is from Martha Stewart (the ONLY Martha-related thing that I like!! ;)) Yikes, Bloody Butcher sorrel sounds gross!! Why did somebody think that's a good name for it?!

and we both loathe sorrel soup...but we cut the big leaves out all the time, and just use the tender small ones...we put them in salads along with lovage, lemon balm, other little piquant things to liven the lettuce up...I also have a young plant of Bloody Butcher sorrel (now doesn't that sound nice??) but it tastes the same, also grows like stink, but is very ornamental -- leaves are splotched with burgundy...an ornamental plant...
