Some may think this is a personal question and sorry if I bother anyone with it...I am just curious. I am a HR Consultant but now am a stay at home mom with my two kids. I am actually rather enjoying it, except when my little one screams-she can shatter all the glass in the house and that of the neighbor's!

good idea.. and while I'm at it, I'll do up a dictionary so that ppl can understand my hubby when he speaks pongolese... (pongolese is what army guys speak- a language this sailor has taken years to learn.. lol)
LOL...well if you print them up as a hand-out for your freinds when you retire then all will be fine :)
it's the downside of working for Her Majesty... life is just a series of TLAs (three letter acronyms)... I sometimes wonder how I'll ever be able to communicate when I retire without them.. lol
you two...that was way too many PCB's MOE's HC's and ppm....english ladies.....LOL
Yup.. PCBs were the issue with us too...50,000 ppm just from one area station 55...I wanted to choke hold the guy from MOE when he announced... PCB does not plume..I was.. oh yeah? and unleashed the resident expert on PCB from HC on him..lol... oh the stories I have from that time in my life.. lol...I got tagged for the job because I speak Haida,Tlingit and Tutchone (some reason DND thought that would be useful.. haha)
You know you've travelled way too many flights from Timmins to Moosenee when you can call the pilot of the aircraft and ask him to hold the plane because you're running late.. lol
yes we should talk.. we'd have a riot...
in 1984 cleanup of the 26 abandoned sites. I had stirred the pot by going up and taking pics of the PCB-containing tranformers and capacitors floating around outside on the ground and still in the buildings, then showing them to INAC and saying "well, you know, we have a new law banning release of PCBs....I think you have a problem....". Hah! we should *talk* further....By the time the later cleanup at re-orienting of the DEW Line sites and the later cleanup of Mid Canada came along, I had moved on to something else. Were you civilian, at that time, or military?
I teach grade nine and ten English and drama...as I sit here taking a break from marking English exams to mark....English essays, I've been crying! I asked my tens to write about what they learned this year as their final essay and some of the stuff they wrote reduced me to tears. Sure I could have a job where I make twice as much, but man...I'm a lucky girl to be where I am. Sorry to gush, but my kids rock, and my job does too!
D.
I work for Fisheries and Oceans Canada although my job is entirely funded by Herring fisherman. My official title is Pelagics GIS and Data Research Technician. Basically I do alot of computer work and get to do field work for a couple weeks of the year. When I am in the office I mainly map herring spawn and herring related research along the BC coast. Right now I am waiting to hear if my job will be extended otherwise I will be looking for a new job at the end of July. Part of the joys of working for the federal government on industry $$.
I'm a museologist...studied anthropology, archaeology, museum and gallery management ... have worked on projects in Canada, US, UK, and the Middle East! I use to be a curator working with archaeological materials and human remains but decided managment was a lot more interesting...plus I missed interacting with live humans!
We probably have mutual friends then...does the Mid Canada Line ring a bell? Some friends of mine did the initial report on the remediation of that site. I got tagged to be the go between the stakeholders, First Nations and DND/DCC.
I'm not sure if I should write in on this thread since many of you already know what I do. I am/was a work-at-home mom, freelance writing for various newspapers and corporations on health-related matters (and some interior design stuff). As of Monday, I'll be writing fulltime for Sick Kids hospital.
Guess I'm no. 3 graphic designer here. Been doing it for more years than I can divulge, and I've been self-employed for about 13 years. I do marketing, advertising, flyers, catalogues, promotions etc. etc., a lot of it for the office products industries.
I am a biologist/physiologist by training, having done a thesis on mercury in fish around the time the aboriginals in northern Ontario were diagnosed as having been poisoned with mercury from the local pulp mill. I have worked in private industry and also in government for over 25 years, on environmental issues of all kinds.
Right now we are in the middle of creating new policies and programs on environmental education, so that is exciting. In fact, this afternoon, we are doing a major presentation to our management board....
I am, however, looking forward to retiring in a few years, when I will have a chance to garden and also to do my genealogical research and pastel painting.
what an awesome group we are!! Hats off to all of you!
hats off to you for teaching...I've always equaled teaching grade 3 as being on a psych ward when the prozac ran out...(wait, or is that grade 7 and 8??? lol) and I truly admire anyone that takes on that age group.
grade 3 teacher. There are only 18 more days of school left.... :). I've been teaching for 7 years. That's been my only career and I love it! I have no kids of my own...just me and my DH! Planning to have a kid before I'm 30! Thanks for sharing, everybody!!! It sure is interesting to read about everybody's life outside of decorating.
Cheers!
awww...it's fun to get into trouble....:D
I am a stay at home mom, with 2 boys, 2 and 4. I am a graphic designer, but since moving here to Canada 2 years ago, I have stayed at home due to work permits etc. I should be going back to work next year when both kids are in school. My hobbies keep me sane and out of trouble, like gardening, renovating this house room by room and painting fine art.
but after I did the Rwanda and Bos prosecutions I had to take some stress leave. I still have nightmares about some of scenes we had to walk through. But nothing like my boss had to investigate.
I find my hobbies help soothe the imagery in my head.
now that sounds like a cool job....lol
Your job sounds amazing. I would guess it is quite rewarding to prosecute war criminals and bring them to justice. Rewarding and yet heart wrenching at the same time.
but before joining the military and becoming a lawyer, I was in film and automotive journalism.
Now I prosecute war criminals. So I split my time between being here in Canada and in Europe.
stay at home mom of 2 boys turning 5 and 8....before getting married 10 years ago...i was a figure skating instructor...taught alot of the dances and the fine tuning skills to get the kids ready for competition...got married and haven't worked since...i have coaching a lil on the side with the organizations that my kids skate or play hockey with...i love doing it....every time i lace up my skates my heart starts to beat faster and the NOTHING beats the feeling of doing a jump....well other than missing the jump and landing on your a$$...that hurts....LOL
I'm a self employed writer and graphic designer who concentrates on doing marketing materials for businesses. I also do information type pieces and specialize in employment and employer related pieces. That specialty comes from some time spent working for the Feds in employment and researching careers for them. Before that I was a professional photographer who worked in the TV/media industry and somehow between fine arts, graphic arts, and public relations education it all works together now into what I am doing.
It's kind of a windy road, but it got me here and I like it although I'd rather have someone go find the contracts for me so I could just concentrate on what I like to do.
I am about 10 years ahead of you:D I graduated in 1983!! Just before they became a University.
I worked in the Restaurant business since 1980 and before that in the bank. i have been in Hotels and just restaurants but perfer just restaurants. Left my job when we moved earlier this year so I decided it scale back and I am now just doing service in a beautiful Ocean side resort for the summer. As a couple we say we are semi retired DH is fulltime retired and I work so collectively we are semi retired.
When were you at Ryerson? I was in the Fashion program there, too. Just for a year though...95 or 96.
I was in IT and thought about the job even in my sleep. Know what - I don't miss it at all - well of course I miss all the people. Just too many new things in my life - new house, new city, new ideas. I refuse to spend my time looking back. That was then, this is now.
I have been a professional Interior Decorator for 10 years.
Before that I stayed home with my children, volunteered at church and school, I am a graduate of Ryerson Fashion Design and Merchandising.
I also worked in the automotive supply industry as a customer service representative and did display advertising for 22 stores in SW Ontario ( window dresser).
To support my business, I belong to the London Home Builder's Association where I sit as a Director on the Board as Chair of the Renovation Council.
Interior Decorating and worked in the field for a little when I was fresh out of school. For the past 5 years I was working for a financial institution and then an insurance company. I had gotten my mutual funds license and then my life insurance license and reality almost sunk in that maybe this was what I would end up doing forever. That made me cringe, and somehow, as luck would have it, a position as a decorating consultant with a hardwood flooring retailer literally fell into my lap. Even though it's just hardwood, it's good because it's getting me back into my creative mode. Some days I think of telling my bosses they shouldn't be paying me because it doesn't feel like work most of the time.
