for Valentines.
I am sure we have this post every year but lets have another one.
I really was not planning to do anything. Last year I talked DH into a Valentines dance, we had a great time but this year it's not going on.
I was planning on just doing a great dinner and a bottle of wine.
But does everyone get your dh cards and things. I don't , I used to but haven't for a few years now. I I tell DH that everyday is like Valentines day being married to him. (oh yah, he really believes that) I just feel that it's money just going down the drain buying all these cards and cutsy little things.
Also do you do anything for your kids. Same thing I used to put gift bags full of little things by their beds in the morning, but now since they are older those little things have gotten expensive,
so lets here what everyone else is doing.

my sweetie is working in Alberta & I haven't seen him since Christmas. I would love to have an evening snuggling. Guess I gotta wait a couple more weeks. Hope everyone enjoys the company they have on that day. It is hookie but hey, it's kinda fun
I am a hopeless romantic and love being so, but I must admit I also HATE valentine's day. It's an awful hallmark holiday that puts too much pressure on the guys, and they do enough already!
My DH buys into it every year with the flowers and chocolates but I'm trying to train him against falling into the trap because it really is a waste of money. Last year we made homemade cards for each other with my scrapbooking supplies and cooked dinner and settled on the couch for a lazy night together with a old bottle of wine - it was perfect.
This year we are going up to Ottawa with his entire family and so we will be taking his neice and nephew out to the canal for skating and hot chocolate, but we might try to squeeze in a private dinner if the price is right. But I never like to make a big deal about such a silly "holiday".
Great ideas. We've banned chocolate from the house since we got our Golden Retriever puppy a year ago - he has proven again and again that he can outsmart the human residents of this house and get the food he isn't supposed to have and chocolate is poison to dogs - so - no more chocolate - actually at our son's request because he's worried about puppy.
For the past couple of years I have just gotten our son one of those little hearts they are always selling for a children's charity at this time of year. He keeps them in his room, carries them in a pocket on days when he feels a need to be close, and sticks them in a jacket pocket when he goes on field trips alone. They are under $5, mean something to him, and support a good cause. On top of that - if puppy swallows them they should go right through since they are smooth and don't have a pin or anything on them - lol.
I don't think your a grouch not at all I tend to agree that retail has created another day to spend money. I think for Valentines for my daughters I will make them a special dinner also. Not that I don't anyway but usually on weekends everyone is going in different directions and they normally are not at home. I might buy them a chocolate heart and that will be about it. If they don't know I love them by now then they never will. Same as my husband.
One year (many years ago) I made him a coupon book filled with coupons for back massages, breakfast in bed and a few other thinks not to be mentioned in writing. That was fun. My daughters also made me one, 1 free vacuum, 1 week of emptying the dishwasher , 1 week of setting the table. There was something in it for every month.
I find it horrific they have all those heart shaped boxes of chocolates in the stores at this time of year when women are trying to loose weight - particularly this woman who is on track and plans on keeping it that way! Horrific!
My goal every year for valentines is not to spend a single cent! lol My stomach gags at all the red and pink candy and chocolates. I see no reason to spend money on things I dont need and all the c**p that is available, its all marketing. I refuse to buy those silly cards for the kids to take to school too.
The only good thing about valentines is it means the day after, the shelves will be stocked with Easter things, and THEN I spend my money! lol I love easter.
Call me a grouch, but this is the one 'holiday' I hate.;)
