Where do you shop for clothes?

itsjustme's picture

I have become very wary of where to buy clothes, as I am finding most clothes are made in china, and they ALL shrink when I wash them, in a sneaky kind of way too!
They don't shrink on the first or second wash, but by the 5th wash they shrink about 2-3inches! This is infuriating me.

All my clothes have sleeves that are hovering between my wrist and elbow, and too short by my waist.
They fitted perfectly when I bought them. And I haven't grown taller, just in case you were wondering!
I wash in cold water, and then tumble dry on cool. But don't iron, should I be?

Where do you buy your clothes and are they also shrinking?

My Dh jeans have also shrunk by 2 inches in the length, I mean really, it's insane.

Has anyone looked at the new line of clothes, Joe, at the Superstore. It's in direct competition to Wal-Mart. I glanced at them today. I was surprised. Good prices, good colours and not bad styles for the shirts. That does mean they would fit or suit me but I bet they will appeal to lots of people.

I like their clothes too, nice quality and they last and always look fresh..plus they ship tp Canada. The most comfy jeans I own came from Sears and I have paid a lot more for jeans only to leave them hanging in the cupboard after a few wears as they are not as comfy as the Sears jeans. They sit at the waist, have not shrunk at all either. Sometimes I will hit a good buy at Winner's as well. I like Liz Claiborne clothes too and the odd time Winner's has them as well as an outlet near me.

Eddie Bauer - definitely! There stuff doesn't wear out. Also love JJill...it's even better than Eddie Bauer. I shop mainly in the states....Marshall Fields, Ann Klein, DSW (for shoes......you can get designer shoes for $25) etc. Quality, selection and price is much better. Most high end Canadian stores are way over price with few discounts. In the States there is always a BARGAIN!

Nah, I'm here to stay.'"I'm here til Thursday" is just something comedians say to the audience, and I had just been told I was hilarious.

I'm bummed to hear that the sizing has actually changed. I was kidding myself that I was losing weight.

Re above comments on teen girls and their low pants, I agree! They mostly look trashy rather than cool. There was a young teller at the bank last summer, and she really had the figure for it if anyone did, flat little tummy, no muffin top whatsoever, but her poor little belly was all covered with goosebumps from the air conditioning. She looked ridiculous. Of course, most of them did. Why don't tellers feel like they should dress more business-like, I wonder? Or maybe it's just my bank? They DO look like they're getting ready to work in the garden.

Ah, I'm just crabby today :D

Frenchie, you are right about the sizes going down. I wore the same size Liz for years. All of a sudden I could go a size smaller at the same weight.

buy a lot of my clothes at The Bay or Sears. I usually don't have shrinkage problems.(Saying this reminds me of a Seinfeld episode!)

I just bought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans on sale at the Bay. They sit slightly below the waist although on the label it says sits at the waist. They are the stretchy type and feel very comfortable. It took me a long time to find a pair that fits well.

Also, what's the deal with ladies sizing these days? My dress size is getting smaller all the time even though I haven't lost weight. I've gone down 2 sizes.

homebody, you've gotta stay till the weekend at least!!!! :D

What does hubby tossing laundry into the dryer look like?? Well, a lot like me, I guess -- only bigger and hairier, and he doesn't swear every time he drops a wet sock on the floor ;) He's not so good at the putting-the-clean-clothes away part. Hmmm... but then, neither am I!! :D

As for what to wear while gardening.... pretty much whatever I happen to have on :) I sometimes get the urge to dead-head when I get home from work, so I garden in my work clothes (which aren't a heck of a lot different from my non-work clothes!!) For the dirtier work, shorts and a T-shirt.

"doughy masterpiece"-love that term. Too funny!

I don't mind the marginally low-waisted jeans that fit JUST below the waist, as those fit to the waist on me. I'm 5'3" and although I should be able to wear petites pants they are usually floods, as most of my shortness is in the body. It took me years of bad fits to realize I am a long-legged petite.

I'd never be able to wear the *extremely* low-waisted jeans that are rather bikini-cut, much lower than what was once called hipsters. I wouldn't want to, as they would neither suit me or be comfortable. Actually I don't like the looks of them generally. The look was spoiled when I saw a pair worn badly by someone who was sporting some rather obvious and long stray belly hair that ruined the picture. At the risk of sounding old or old fashioned but I'll say it anyway: those bikini-low jeans should not be worn in school. I can't stand seeing young girls sporting jewelled thong straps out the back.......or anything else peeking up either. There are many young ladies who wear very low-cut jeans well, but far too many wear them in a way that makes them look trashy. I don't think that's the look they're going for, either.

For those of you that garden, what do you wear when you do it? (I suppose that has a lot to do with how visible you are, maybe?)

I have been getting a teenage boy to help me with some of the garden work (my DH doesn't do laundry, has never read a clothing label in his life (they have labels? he might innocently claim), and hates gardening with a passion). So I have tried to find clothes that won't stunt the kid's emotional chances with the opposite sex. Short-sleeved shirts, capri pants, and dammit, shave my legs. I used to have a neighbour where we lived before (male) (grossly fat) (not young) and seeing him working in his garden kept me from dating for years. He wore a too-short wife-beater (sleeveless undershirt) and baggy shorts that gave away far too much. EEWWW Just thinking about it :hurl:

The mental picture of a frolicking laundry DH is hilarious...

My DH is actually very good about laundry - so diligent in fact that he reads the labels and decides that he can't wash my clothes, because they're too complicated. So I fold the laundry and find my socks and underwear and *all* of his clothes and DSD's clothes, but not mine! It's like mine went to the laundry black hole. It's not as if I can't do my laundry - of course I can, but by then there isn't enough to make a full load - and he wonders why I have so many clothes - it's necessity I tell you!

So it seems it the dryer  My dh clothes also shrink, but the kids clothes don't!

Smoodgie, your DH tosses clothes into the dryer???? Lord thunderin Jaysus, what's that look like? I doubt my DH knows we have a dryer, or washer. He frolics through the house, tossing work shirts, rolled-up stinky socks, and dirt-encrusted jeans to the four winds (picture a flower girl strewing rose petals) He is my darling, but laundry, don't even think about it :o

OMG, homebody, you're hilarious!!!!! :D :D :D I'm sure most people have their own special doughy masterpieces, so you're not alone!!

Muffin-top is the perfect term for that too low/too tight look!! It's absolutey fine to be any shape and size -- but the thing is, you have to dress in a way that's most appropriate for your body. It's fine to be big, but it's not fine to squish a big body into little pants. Everybody should wear the styles and cuts that are most flattering for their bodies, trendy or not.

bigmama, I get a distinct sense that I'll be doing the butt-crack thing in these low-rise jeans too!! I think I'd even be afraid to sit down, in case they sink too low!! Not sure if we have a Gap around here.... I hope other stores carry something like Long & Lean!!

I'm fed up with having to hang clothes to prevent shrinkage too. My hubby tosses everything he owns into the dryer, no matter what it is -- why can't girl clothes be as resilient?!

I buy a lot of my things from small dress shops - mostly Canadian designers. The chain stores seem to have clothing that shrinks and never looks as good as the day you bought it. I think they heavily starch and steam their clothes so they look good on the rack....but get them home and that's a different matter. I too, wash almost everything in cold water and hang to drip-dry including my nightgowns. When you've paid $65 or so for a Claudel nightie, one cycle in the washer and it doesn't fit anymore. It's a pain, hanging everything including cords up to dry but, that seems to be the way it is. As much as possible, I try to avoid buying anything cotton, but, if I do, I try to make sure it has a small percentage of polyester or tricot. Summer t-shirts are the worst...I guess the stores just want you to keep buying.

homebody's picture

You may have noticed that a lot of young girls wear the low-rise pants with a midriff-baring top, but they are kind of pudgy, so there's a roll that bulges out over the top of the jeans. This is called a muffin-top because it looks like the way muffins come out over the baking cup. So by extension chubby girls in too-tight, too-low low-rise pants are also called muffin tops. I think that's a very neat term. Plus it helps me deal with the fact that I should never NEVER wear low-cut pants, because I too have a doughy masterpiece :(

Now that I work out of my home, I just need a few good outfits for meetings, and mostly I just want comfort and minimal care. For summer I like Weekenders capri pants. They stretch in every direction, and when I'm working in my garden, believe me, they need too. And they wash very easily and don't shrink. And they come up high enough to prevent plumber butt-crack. And if I have to go to town I don't have to change (I would if I were wearing shorts, to spare the townspeople the sight of varicose-vein-a-rama) But then I'm aa old bat, so don't have to worry about trendy. :p

But they just feel a bit.... well, low!! Not to mention that jeans that are low just don't work with underwear that are high!! But I just can't stand the feel of bikini underwear. And don't even suggest a thong!! Even more

What are everyone's thoughts on low-rise jeans/pants??

LOL I had mine on yesterday and when I went to scrub the floors I turned my husband off " You look like a plumber!!!" LOL I am sure I did !!!
I like the Gap Long and Lean as they come up higher.

I actually really don't like shopping for clothes. But then when I need something like a new pair of jeans, I hit every store I can think of!!

DH doesn't like shopping anywhere else and the truth is the quality of designer clothing is uncomparable. With cotton clothing, the safest thing is to prewash before wearing and let air dry or even fluff dry in the dryer with no heat.

I wear a petite size so have less selection. Even in Vancouver my size is usually sold out. They have a large population that wears the same size as I do. I mostly shop in Dillards, Macy's or Robinson May. Save my shopping for our trips to Vegas. I tell DH that it's for my own good otherwise I might be gambling my money away.

I hate jeans with lycra. I find they shrink more than regular jeans. It's almost impossible to find them anymore. Not that shrinkage for length is a problem. It's the butt. Don't buy the lycra ones anymore. I don't think you can beat a pair of well broken in jeans. I have a pair that are practically thread bare that I love to wear around the house. I look impovrished and then I take a whole bunch of name brand clothes to the women's shelter. Just love those old jeans.

I wash a lot of clothes in cold water and minimal drying time. I'd like to pretend some have shrunk but my bathroom scales are giving a different explanation. And I've developed some muscle where I don't want it.

Expensive, but their sales can be good, and I like the outlet north of Toronto. I also pick up a few things at Eddie Bauer.

is the killer....75% of my clothes get hung to dry and i find the garmet lives longer.....and doesn't shrnk!!
i've shopped at reitmans and places similar but find the quality isn't there. i'm a mexx fan as well. i shop at samuel & co., i pay a little more but i find the quality is there and the clothes last longer. i recently started wearing haggar, i'm really impressed with their lines..they have both casual and dressy stuff. there's also a place called the clothes line that i shop at....they carry name brands at half the price.

Well I gave up years ago and do not put any cotton in the dryer. I don't care if it claims to be preshrunk or not, it dries by air. I'm tall so sleeves are a big deal to me and I never did find any kind of cotton that didn't shrink in length (denim is known to shrink in that direction at least 5 - 10% and can keep on shrinking over time so I rarely hem them if I am lucky enough to find them too long as they will eventually get to be the right length). I also never ironed that stuff when damp or it was the same shrinking.

Meanwhile, a drycleaner taught me something years ago that I still do on occassion. If something has gotten too short or too tight, it gets stretched when wet. I have even gone so far as to attach weight to the sleeves or legs while the thing is drying on the hanger. You can get a lot of length and width back with some careful pulling.

If stuff is wrinkled (I really haven't done any ironing since I started working from home) I throw it in the dryer once it's dry, with a slightly damp towel or facecloth for 10 minutes or so.

The only way I think you can safely wash and machine dry things and not have them shrink is to get polyester or some other manmade fabric. Even a mix can help. For cotton t shirts, sweatshirts, and such I just get a size larger and then I don't worry if they shrink in the dryer. Again, my casual lifestyle helps a lot there as I don't have to get too wild about fit with that sort of stuff.

On the other hand, if you are buying things that have a tag that say it's safe to wash and dry by machine and they are shrinking or losing their shape, take them back. Stores are not going to be great at monitoring that sort of thing unless they get the returns.

I find cheap clothes are garbage. Although I am not rich and cant afford to buy alot of pricey stuff, I do have some. I love MEXX, I have washed and dryed all their products and havent had any problems. And since I am far from having the perfect body, their clothes certainley bring out the best. Tommy H isnt bad either.

Their stuff is a bit more money but I've had really good luck with it lasting years. What I have bought has washed well and is very low maintenance.

I shop mostly at Reitmans too. I like their in stylish trendy wear. But what I really like about them is their clothes fit me to a tee. I go in, grab my size, try on, perfect and out I go again. Very important when I have both boys with me!
So I am very disappointed that these clothes are shrinking.

have come to realize, it really doesnt matter where i have bought my clothes or the girls clothes....some fabrics are just horrible anymore...they have some tees that can go in the dryer and many hang to dry....i shop walmart, zellers, old navy and many of the stores that you find in the malls
