white cabinet glaze?

Ok, so me and wife are soon moving in to our first house and there are so many upgrades to be done, but we are starting with our kitchen. First thing will be cabinets and as our budget is pretty tight, I'll be working with what I have pretty much.Right now the cabinets are dark wood with old outdated hardware. Im planning on adding decorative molding to cabinet faces, new knobs/pulls, painting the cabinets an off white or creamy white and adding dark glaze especially in the molding areas to give it that rustic look or the popular look nowadays. Im looking for advice or a DIY on how do this step by step, I need any and all info/advice to make sure I do this the right way. What paint (valspar) , what glaze color? I really have no idea how to go about this, but am good at diy projects and feel confident I can do it. THANKS!

You will have to really wash down and probably give a quick sand to your present cabinets. Using TSP is recommended. Cabinets get a build up of grease etc that you can't always see so it is very important. When you add the mouldings make sure that you double check the opening and closing of doors and drawers vs. hinges to make sure you don't have any problems.
They will need a good primer. I would recommend two coats of primer.
They will then require at least two coats of paint in your desired colour.
If you are going to put a glaze on them I would suggest a white that could complement the glaze. Look at some of the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection colours. It is best to take off all the doors and lay them flat, as well as pull out all the drawers and stand them up so they are flat.
I would really recommend that you go to a good paint store and ask for advice. You will need to decide if you want to use latex paint or oil paint.
Oil paint is not going to be on the market for much longer so you may want to just go with a good quality latex.
I had my cupboards done about four years ago and they are still in excellent shape. Good luck and welcome to the forum and congrats on your first house.
