I am looking for a white duvet cover (King Size) and have found it very difficult especially at a reasonable price. IKEA has white covers with matching pillowcases and the prices are extremely low. There seems to be nothing in between. Has anyone had any experience with the quality of these bed linens? It will cover a white duvet but if it works I would like to purchase another one to cover a comforter but am concerned with the material showing thru. I like the look of a King size duvet on a queen size bed but it plays havoc with the pillows and they will have to be resized. I am going for the light airy look (White with a throw at the bottom for colour).

You've got to be careful with this. The mattress sizes IKEA recommends and the mattress sizes US and Canadian beds are made for are very different so you may end up with an oversized duvet (not so bad) or an undersized duvet (very bad!!!) Make sure you check any specifications before you purchase
I will know next week, but if I remember correctly there are no cracks, etc just an indentation and an outline where the old window once was and it was centred. So, I will now have a number of ways to go.
At this point I really don't want to wall paper again and am invisioning just painting and than looking for something to put over the bed.
My true dream would be to paint our oak bedroom set but I am sure that my DH would not survive the suggestion. He stated he will repaint the room but I haven't even sprung it on him that I am removing the wall paper from the two walls.
I think "cherlallismom" was close when she stated that the wallpaper was traditional and I feel I want a more contemporary feel (unfortunately it means the whole house).;)
About that lath and plaster... if you have cracks or unevenness where the window once was that is an easy fix usually. You need to have the wall (or at least that part of the wall) skim coated a bit. If you are handy you can do it yourself.
The painter I had here a couple of weeks ago showed me (I have old plaster). He used a pre-mixed drywall compound rather than a patching compound like polyfilla. The reason is it's easier to spread to you can get a finer finish without all the extra sanding. If it's cracked, you will need to tape first or the crack will just come back.
If you look into it, you will see that old plaster is not very had to fix and make good again. Push comes to shove, you put something like a .5" drywall over the entire wall. A pro painter or drywall person could fix it for you in a day or less (and if it was a painter, they'd do it as part of the job if they are any good... the lesser painters don't do very much prep but the good ones do).
On the other hand, if that old window was centered, maybe you could just colour block it so no one would really notice. If it was right over the bed, a colour block following the lines could make for a focal point over the bed for instance.
Meanwhile I bought that beadboard Wall Doctor paper to fix a bad wall I have going down to my basement. I haven't used it yet but it does look thick enough to cover most sins. I wasn't all that impressed with some of the other patterns but then I tend to avoid things that look like swirly stucco or whatever. They do have some that are more like traditional lapocrysta (sp?) and that is how a lot of old plaster problems were covered in the past.
That's the same duvet cover my MIL recently bought. She loves it. There's nothing wrong with having just one wall of wallpaper, but that one is a bit too traditional to get away with it, I think. Pick a more contemporary style and it will be just fine. A lovely feature wall behind the bed for sure! I suppose you could probably even paper over the existing wallpaper. The paintable paper is also a good idea. Home Depot has quite a few varieties in stock.
I see that they even have a wall liner that would cover up any imperfections in the walls or ceilings and it says that you can paint it to match your room.
Hey Lass, another option might be paintable wallpaper. Go to www.grahamandbrown.com Wall Doctor paintables. They have beadboard effect paintable wallpaper and some other really nice papers for $25.00 a double bolt. This might be a solution for you. With this you could paint all the same colour.
Our house is older and at the head of the bed in that wall (before we purchased) was a window that had been filled in. We had always wallpapered that wall because the outline of the window seemed to always be there. The orginial walls are slat and plaster (I think that is the correct term). However, I believe you are right and I should remove all the paper (starting Monday). May as well jump right in!!
I have already committed a "faux pas" and wallpapered not the whole room or one wall but two walls. I believe that is a "no,no" but at least I do not have the whole room to do.
Also, it seems that my style is changing. I need something simplier and not as heavy or...........................::rolleyes:
Lass- if it were me doing the change I think that I would take all of the wallpaper down and start anew. You seem to want a change so remove the paper. You said yourself you are trying to justify your choice of wallpaper. That was then and this is now and your choices on your other posts have been really nice so I would go for it! (paint) You could choose some nice artwork for the wallpaper wall to go above the bed. BTW, my bedroom lamps are similar to your choice. Great for reading!
Purchased white duvet cover with two pillow covers for $44.95. This is not my bedroom but the second busy picture is. I am going to remove the wall paper on all sides but the end and paint walls a golden colour. Lamp on nightstand is being replace with the attached pic. I am trying justify my choice of wallpaper (years ago) but it really doesn't look as busy in the room as in the picture. ;)
Exactly! WAY cheaper than buying them.
And you can add any embellishments like piping or cording or even funky buttons if you're adventurous and have made button holes to contain your comforter. :)
Duvet covers are so easy to make. Buy a king size white sheet, a long ziper or buttons. Sew up the three sides add the zipper or buttons and there you go! WAY cheaper than buying them pre made.
I have an ancient one, I thimk my mum bought it in the sevevties, it is plain pink one side, and brown with pink flowers on the other :hurl: It is a good weight, though, for spring and fall, and that is what I have done in the past - pink side up, and it just warms up one or two plain covers that I have ..
On the oher hand, I have a positively ancient Ikea cover, and it is so heavy and thick that it alone works well in spring and fall, with no comforter in it !
Yiipes, you are right the bottom, I believe is plain (not white, but light) by the time you finish layering ....................... it will not be noticable!! Thanks!!!
The fabric on the comforter will show thru a white cover unless it is heavy like a canvas fabric, which would really be heavy IMO.
I have some cream fabric here, very heavy cotton and expensive fabric and the color of a comforter would show thru it.
does the underside of the comforter have the same pattern or is it plain/white? I had the same situation until I finally figured out the underside was white and I could just have that side as face up while in the duvet cover (took me awhile for my synapses to put that together:rolleyes:)
If you are in or near the GTA try "Beddingtons". The prices are OK & selection pretty good.
Having the duvet cover at IKEA $44.95 with shams picked up.. You can't beat the price point. But will continue search at Fabricland and will also pay a visit to Homesense, next time in Ottawa. Love their lampshades.
I have found my best sheets at Costco and President's choice (no ironing). Love it. A friend suggested sewing two king size sheets together (labour and time) but you still can't beat the price at IKEA and the price factor. Have also decided to try lime green sheets under the white duvet cover, folded over.
I was in Ottawa at the Bay and they had a sale on white duvet covers but (I forget brand name) they had rindstones on them and I didn't even want to consider the care they would take or the comments from DH. Thank you once again for your input and advice.
If you have a fabricland close by, check out that. I found a great white duvet cover there and I think I paid $30 for the queen. I know that they had tons of Kings at our store.
It is completely white with bars of texture but very subtle. I'd take a picture but it is already packed.
I have a white duvet cover and shams from ikea, and I really like them a lot! There are some that are thicker than others, and I can't totally recall the name of mine, but its pretty good. It's so good for layering on top of. And affordable.
But another really good source for bedding is Homesense. They often have high quality bedding a good prices and white is a common one there. Plus you can pick up some patterned sheets to mix it up while you're there.

Ikea Duvet:

Have you tried the Sears.ca site? I took a fast look at duvet covers and there are some shown in colours but if you click on them are also available in white. The ones I looked at were under $100.I don't know if you will find many that will not let a pattern show through unless they are made of something quite dense/thick but you never know.
I have 3 IKEA covers that are white with coloured patterns. One in my daughter's room, one in the spare room and one in the master bedroom at the cottage. I also have two darker coloured ones in another cottage bedroom. Four of these are several years old and all are in good condition. They launder easily. If you like a casual look just give them a shake out of the dryer. A more formal look requires a quick ironing. My MIL also recently bought an all white set from there and she really loves it. I can't answer the question about patterned comforters showing through. It seems like a possibility with any cotton cover, regardless of price point. You will find that you can put King sized pillows in shams on your queen sized bed. Layer them at the back, behind your standard sized pillows and they can look quite sharp. Otherwise its not a huge job to modify the king sized shams down. Flip them inside out and do it from the closed end, not the open end. Just one simple seam required then!
Hi - Check out President's Choice, good quality reasonably priced also Costco may have something.
