White or Stained trim

KarenW's picture

We need to replace the trim on the stairwell wall, currently it is too thin and white. Whatever we choose will be 6 inches wide. Should we continue with the white and match to the existing baseboards, or use oak stained to match the wood trim on the stairs?

I really need some input, better yet, I need someone to tell me what to do!
TIA,
Karen

To me it looks like a flat continuos wall...I may be wrong(?) But, if it is just to hide a dry wall joint and the wall is flat at this area then I would still suggest remove it, dry wall putty the joint and paint it the wall colour.

OR, easier paint the molding your wall colour.

I would paint it the same colour as the wall as I agree with the others---it is the first thing that you see or that your eye is drawn to. It makes your wall look cut up. Even if you stained it it would still make the wall look like it was cut in two. If you paint it the same colour as the wall it would blend in and not be as noticable. I think then, as JoannaM and Inglewood mentioned, it would look more like an architectural detail. Right now it has a racing stripe thing going on. I would love to see it all as one. Let us know what you decide to do.

The trim covers the expansion joint between the drywall sheets, so I do need something.

Do you really need it? It doesn't look like it serves a purpose...it's more distracting then decorative or architechual. I would remove it and not replace it. Paint the wall in a continuos colour ie the red.

I agree that the trim is too thin, so since you would like to remove it, why replace it at all? I would just patch and replaint. If you really want to have some trim in its place I agree with DBD, and I would paint it either the same colour as the wall or something very similar to create a nicely subtle architectural detail.

How about a none of the above? For me, if we are talking that strip half way up the wall, I'd paint it something closer the wall colour or even the colour of the spindles on the stairs.

If I had to choose between white and oak, I'd do oak because I don't like the white line on the wall. it's the first thing you see when the stairs would probably be better.
