I agree the tar sands are a mess but big money will never let that be shut down. I hope that Canada and the US can work together because if we like it or not if they go down the toilet we follow not far behind. I agree that Palin was a bad choice for McCain I think she held him back but I don't think she was his biggest problem I think it was George W that was his problem the people just didn't want another Rep. in the White House. I was impressed with how much better Obama got as the campaign went on his speech tonight was a far cry from when Oprah introduced him and her support. At least it was over early not like the night I was up until 4am to Jimmy Carter get in not that I was all that interested I was up with a tooth ache.

(well we can always sell our oil to China)

Our oil IS dirty. I did a lot of reading about the tar sands recently, and it's awful. Did you know that the tar sands is the most destructive project on the face of the earth right now?? I'm all for shutting the tar sands down completely. Although I'm sure that'll never happen, whether or not America stops buying oil from us (which is also unlikely to happen).

I suspect McCain selected Sarah Palin as his running mate because he figured he would win over voters who were disappointed that a woman wasn't running for president when Obama became the Democratic candidate. Total boob move that was -- the woman is evil :hairpull:

Obama has a real mess to clean up after 8 years of George W in the White House  Hope he can do it!!

I truly hope that Harper will have a strong relationship with Obama.

The recession in the U.S. has hit hard and Canada is really no great concern for them.

Harper had a distant but cordial relationship with George W. Bush.

Harper and Obama seem to me like polar opposites. Obama oozes charisma & style. Harper not so much.

I truly hope that they both get off to a good start. Should things be difficult or go wrong between 2 countries, it is so much easier to repair or fix problems when there is a good established rapport.

Mulroney & Reagan could attest to that.

Obama has never visited Canada and when he does let us hope Harper doesn't screw it up.

Personal chemistry and Canada friendly relations will be critically important for both leaders to connect.

Don't forget that the US President doesn't have the ability to make changes like this just because he wants to... the US system is filled with checks and balances that mean that the President has to lobby, lobby and lobby if he wants anything - first in the House and then in the Senate - where he's lucky if his idea survives intact (remember Clinton's health care?). This is very unlike a Prime Minister in a Parliamentary system - he can have a plan and set his ministries to researching, send it through readings in the House (where some changes may be made, but probably not many) and then call for a vote along party lines and pass the idea. And our Free Trade Agreement? There are 3 countries involved with this treaty and everyone would have to agree on changes. It's not as simple as "I want it changed", it would take years of negotiations. And then each government would have to pass it through their House/Senate/Parlament. He may want changes, but he may not get them.

In a perfect world everyone would like to find more greener ways of doing things but we aren't living in a perfect world. I don't know what to think about that comment Obama made about changing the Free Trade Agreement either. He announced he said he would make changes and then when our government got wind of it one of his assistants said he was just saying that and really had no intentions of changing anything - so he lies just to get elected?
If there are any changes to the Free Trade agreement you can bet it won't be to our advantage because he thinks it's time for Americans to become more self sufficient to help their own which is something Canadians should have been doing too.
When I hear Obama speak I can see why people like him. But at the end of it all he never really says how he will impliment these changes. Sure, the U.S. is messed up socially, financially and every other which way but if half the people in the country aren't drinking his grape juice then I can't see him being able to change much.

Well what I have learnt from all of this is that it really didn't matter who McCains running mate was as long as it wasn't a black man or woman. It could have been a cardboard cut out pretty much for all those Republicans would have cared. It's interesting how they are so close in number of votes, not that it matters at the end because Obama seems to be getting the necessary electoral votes required but I thought he might have gotten more individual votes.

Yes, the thought of Palin stepping up in the role of President (if needed) would be enough to scare me! Not sure what McCain was thinking with this choice?
Just my humble opinion...

Excellent point Sam. Apparently she failed to tell them about the skeletons in her closet. She certainly got them lots of attention too. Good or bad.

I'm on pins & needles watching the results.

TIJMO - It wouldn't even be a contest if Hilary were the candiate. Not that Obama is a lesser person just that the racial factor can control some votes making some places marginal. I was in the US and a few times I heard people say they would vote for Hilary but now they had no choice but to vote for McCain. I was shocked how these people were offering up their opinions, totally unsolicited.

Well... Hillary would have been my 1st choice, but since she's not on the ticket, Obama is the person for the job! :p

Of course... regardless of skin colour, Obama IS the right person for the job. Hands down.

Arizona- I agree with you in worrying about Obama's safety. It's unfortunate that there are still lunatics out there...

The election absolutely should be based on the right person for the job...however, we all recognize the race card will come into play for some.
It'll be interesting to see the results!!!

I have no clue either way. I hear Obama will win by a landslide and then others are speculating that perhaps it will be very close. I just hope people are voting with who they think will do the best job and not basing their vote on a skin colour. Americans will show their true colours today and it wouldn't totally surprise me if they tell pollsters they are voting for Obama yet don't in the voting booth. It wasn't that long ago that there were race riots in the streets of the U.S. and there are people who won't vote for Obama because of his skin colour even if McCain was on his deathbed and Sarah Palin was likely going to be the next President.
And I also worry about Obamas safety. I think he's a lot more useful to the American people alive than he is as a dead President.

I say Obama too...a result I'm hoping for! A breath of fresh air...

Obama all the way, if the American people have done their research, hopefully he will have a productive run at the Presidency and no racist idiots take matters into their hands in a violent way( dont even want to say the word, but it starts with a and ends in n) . This could be a good change, and I have to say, I cant believe the number of Americans who think Obama is a Muslim, which he isnt and which, of course , shouldnt matter even if he was!
