Why do people do the things they do ....

DBF and I had the most amazing day, then as he was driving home tonight we hit really bad traffic on the 401, not at all normal for a Sunday night, so we switch on the news to see what the hold up is and just as we do we hear this....

A women has thrown her 4-5 year old son off the morningside bridge and then her self, she has been pronounced dead on the scene and the little boy is being rushed to the hospital, ... Fast forward to the next news break and they announce that the little boy has not made it. A few minutes later we drive by the scene and I see a body bag in the middle of the road, a million cops, and cars of the people who either must have seen it happen or they are the people who hit the people as they fell. I started to cry, and said a silent prayer for the little boy and the poor people who must have hit him and his mom, in that second their life was changed for ever. I will never understand how a mother could do that to her own child. I still feel sick to my tummy. BDF got all chocked up to, I have never seen him cry but I am sure he was close to tears him self tonight.

Well I had to drive by the exact spot again today, the news crews were still all there, I started to cry as I went by, its horrible to think what had happend there less than 12 hours before, I am ok, I just feel so bad for the people who hit her and that poor little boy, their lives are changed for ever. They still don't know who the woman or child is, thats the sadest part, there is someone sitting at home right now that doesn't know where their son, grandson, nefew, what ever is, they have no idea it was there little guy who was killed last night. I am sure the woman was mentally unbalanced, but really she could have handed her son to the people who were trying to talk her down, she didn't have to take him with her. I made sure to give my little girl a million extra hugs and kisses last night.

Well it's hard to find words for this one. They just did a piece on the news and I guess there were people on the bridge trying to stop her. The whole thing is just so horrible and I can't help thinking about that little boy.

Obviously the woman was troubled but I think it's harder to get help than people think. Until they make it really easy I don' t know what could help. Just another part of the medical system that is worse than a shame.

Condo I hope you and DBF can find a way through this. It must be very disturbing to have something this impact your life.

Unfortunately depression can rear its ugly head before Christmas....although not an excuse...I can only assume the mother was suffering.....any well adjusted individual would not have made that choice....she must have been so desperate.....very sad..................

So sad to think that someone thought they had no other choice what a sad lonely feeling to be so desparate.

I just read about this on the Net. OMG. Absolutely horrifying. I feel so sorry for the people who hit the woman and the child -- their lives will never be the same. Totally innocent people who were just minding their own business, driving home or to a friend's house or wherever, and now they have to live with the gruesome images of what happened forever. And of course, the people who weren't involved but saw it happen, and the police officers and medical personnel who were on the scene..... all of them will be disturbed by this for a long time as well.

condogirl, I'm so sorry that you and your boyfriend witnessed the aftermath of what happened..... it's just so unfair that you have to deal with this :(

I couldn't agree more - early treatment is a good solution, but there is still so much stigma attached to mental illness - sorry, one of my soapboxes, but I will leave it at that for now

condo, that obviously shook you up, hope you and DBF hugged each other lots when you got home,

Oh dear Lord! What a tragic situation :(

This is so sad. I guess all we can do is pray for the family and for those who had to witness this.

That is extremely disturbing........mental illness should be addressed at the first sign of it and so many people could be spared from tragic accidents like this one or other ones.

Awful, just horribly awful is all I can think of. I can't imagine what could lead a parent to this. It would be nice if when people reach the end of their rope like this they would just reach out to other family members or even a neighbour or ALMOST ANYBODY and say, "take my child-I can't handle my life right now".
