I've been wanting a clematis for a long time, so I finally bought one today -- even though I don't actually have a place to put it!!
I'm wondering if a clematis will climb a lamp post?? We've got a a basic, boring black metal lamp post in our front yard that's been incorporated into the flower bed. If I plant the clemtais at the base of the post, will it climb the post??

I can definitely get my hands on some chicken wire. Thanks for the info :)
I'm sure you will have to do something to train it up there, or help it along. Whatever it is, it will be totally covered by the time the clematis climbs it successfully. I read at the gardenweb forums that a few wrapped their lamp post with chicken wire, and they had success with that.
