OK

I'll post it in the Decorating & Design forum, thanks obella.
would you consider having the front of your fireplace drywalled?
If not,I would do it much closer to your wall color...You're right in wanting to change it...
the rest of your room looks very nice.....very cozy and welcoming...
You should really put this question re: your fireplace on the Decorating & Design forum...
I think you would get numerous suggestions.
Good luck
Thanks for your suggestions.
I'm not into to the wall to wall drapes either and I'd like to put up some nice black worught iron curtain rods to hang the drapes on but until the valance is removed you won't be able to see them-so the curtain rods would be a waste of $ right now.
Now I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions as to what colour I should paint my fireplace? It's a bright white and I find it too stark against my warm walls. The walls are Gobi Desert by Behr. Should I go a dark brown/tan or do something in between the walls and white like a cream colour? And I'd keep the mantel white to match the white trim. Any suggestions?
I have the same valances in my home. I would like to remove mine as well, at LEAST in my LR/DR. (we have them in our 3 bedrooms also)
I believe it is possible to remove them and have a good drywaller cover the wall seams. There are also trades people out there that can actually match the popcorn ceiling texture, too. I guess it takes some luck to find the right person for that job, but you may locate someone through word of mouth. The water damage repair companies surely have people to do that, as usually repairs to ceilings are favoured over full ceiling replacement by insurance companies.
Another idea is to make an alteration to the ceiling that results in a 12" or so border of flat ceiling all around, and this flat part is a little lower (closer to the floor) than the popcorn. The look is like something called a tray ceiling, or a false tray ceiling. I haven't priced this but it's an idea that would relieve you of cocerns about matching the popcorn.
Good luck. I don't like my valances either. My sister tells me they are good for keeping the tops of drapes from getting dusty, but that doesn't explain why I have a valance over my fireplace. :) Besides, I'm not into wall-to-wall drapes.
I can't see any reason they can't be removed but you will be faced with repairing the ceiling as the previous owners did. They are probably just made of drywall and attached at the ceiling.
Thanks, I've attached the pics this time!
They are purely decorative (stylish back in the 70's of course). I would like to frame my windows with casing but there is no point with the valance in the way. All the windows on the main (upper) floor have these valances except the kitchen and dining room. In the DR it looks as though the previous owners may have removed the valance as the orange peel ceiling is different in consistency from the rest of the ceiling at about 4 inches from the wall. The wall however is seemless...
Just make sure that they aren't housing any wiring or duct work. You will have to do some ceiling repairs  .
welcome

try right clicking on your picture, click on Open with...then click on Paint
click on Image (top of screen), then stretch and skew...
try 20% in both boxes, then save and attach, it should be the correct size then.
