i know some think that window valances can be dated, but personally i still like them, as i like color but not alot of treatment in such a small living room, at least some i have seen....if you all recall i have the burgundy side panels, like the color but because they hang so high to clear the baseboard heater, i never noticed before that it looked that bad until i sat on the sofa across from the window....THEY LOOK LIKE SHRUNK CURTAINS lol i do some mentioned brackets to keep them away from the heater....but hubby still doesnt feel safe with that idea either, the best treatment i liked was swags going down the sides with the straight valance in the middle....i did try just straight valances but made my window look wide and narrow...so i was thinking of i think what they call ascot valances....any pics of valances to share and styles that you would think to suit the living room window
thanks'

Our house is a little odd. We have the electric basements in the 2 bedrooms on the second floor, but the main floor is the forced air gas furnace. The house is about 100 years old, and at some point in the past, when it was renovated, the ducts weren't extended up to the second floor. It's not really a problem because we like our bedroom cool (and with the cost of electricity, we keep the heat down low), but it also means that we have no heat in the bathroom! That's more of a problem these cold mornings! So we've got a space heater in there. We're planning a major bathroom reno at some point, and hope to have something done then.
Good luck with the valances.
sounds very nice....and gosh girl you are so creative too.....love to see pics sometime if you would like to share....arent those darn baseboards a pain to work with

DBD...the first pic is very similiar to what i had years ago....except it was actuall swags on each side and a straight valance in the middle instead of scarfing....it was the best look for that window....that is perfect, i think i will certainly go back with that look again....
jem...good idea, do you mean cut the panels to the length shown in DBD's pic and then a valance in between the two panels...as i did try just panels one time to the bottom of the window with no valance in between and it looked horrid....
jenjen.............lol oh i so remember those valances that you stuff....not again, no way, no how lol
geminitwin....that window is fabulous, but i dont think it would be enough on the large window...it seems the window somehow needs to be framed to look right, but thanks so much for sharing your pic
thank you all and hopefully sometime after xmas i will have done some changes and post some pics

I also like valances, and in some cases, they are definitely required. We have 2 windows in our bedroom, along the same wall. One is big - probably 5 feet wide and 6 feet tall. The other is almost the same height, but only 2 1/2 feet wide. The problem is that both windows are not quite the same height. I have Hunter Douglas duets in the windows for privacy and the a sheer fabric over that. I've made the windows look the same height by mounting valances the same distance from the ceiling. Because we have electric baseboards in that room, I can't have anything hanging too low in the window.
I like a very simple valance - no frills, or swags or anything like that. I made mine from the same fabric as my duvet cover.
I have another valance in my dining room. The window just faces out to our neighbour's house about 2 1/2 feet away from ours. I have another pleated shade which I usually don't pull down all that much, but could if I wanted to. I bought a woven runner in Mexico last winter and clipped it to a black rod from Ikea and it looks great. (Mind you, we have a lot of Mexican accents in our house.) But you get the idea.
This is one simple treatment to do
do not have to go all the way to the floor. Extending them only to the bottom of the window (DBD's pics) is an excellent way to overcome the concern of the radiators.
It may be possible for you to use your existing panels to make a valence if you cut them to the bottom of the window trim.
DBD's pic #1 would be perfect in your room.
i was thinking of possibly being able to do full floor length panels...then using a tie back thingy...to pull them away from the heater...but if your heater runs the whole length of the wall...then that might not work...i think when people think about valances being dated i think they mean the older style from a few years back....y'know the poofy ones that you had to stuff grocery bags or tissue paper in to make them well poofy....like all things valances have changed to more elegant styles...and well if you like the poofy ones...get them...i think they are still available....but you that DH of yours out and go get those extending brackets....LOL...tell him i said so!!!!
I found a couple of pictures that might be samples of non-floor length with blinds.
Meanwhile, I was thinking about the scarves my mom got at Linens & Things last year. They were nice in that they had about 18' of sort of a lace or cut out on the bottoms. I have to say I don't usually go for lacey type stuff, but these were really nice and very contemporary. Just thinking lace might allow enough air flow to allow you (your hubby) to feel safer with the extra length.
The other thing I was thinking of was beads. What about seeing if you could find (or make) a bead fringe for the bottom. I've seen them various lengths so depending on how short your panels are, you may be able to find some that would work. Non flamable and could give you that extra length and colour you seem to want.
You might be ableto find something in a local fabric store or over the Internet to trim your existing panels with that will work with those heaters
very nice and thanks a million....do you have any window valances shown with a blind like ours pictured on a big living room like ours.....i know i ask too much lol

Here area few styles for you....I will find more as I forgot where my site is LOL.
The red/white check valance is a table cloth on the kitchen window. LOL
believe that the heater runs pretty much the full length of the wall, i had thought of that too but the whole panel would have to be on the wall....i cant change the aluminium mini blind thingy lol its not very old and we had to custom order it from homedepot and hubby would fit on me and you may find me posting for a new home lol

Janet does your heater just go under the window can you put your side panels to the floor if they are off to the side of the window. If you can what about a Roman blind over the window and floor length side panels.
