Wood Flooring Help!

jensenmanor's picture

Hi everyone!

We are looking at installing hardwood or bamboo flooring in our living room and downstairs hallway. The problem is, we have beautiful dark maple stairs which predominate the area, stained a very dark Jacobean, and also some dark leather furnishings (leather chairs, console, etc).

What colour should the hardwood/bamboo flooring be? Should it be a dark stain to closely match the stairs, or can it be a contrasting light stain? I'm just worried that with dark hardwood floors, everything will become too oppressive looking. But with a lighter wood floor, it will look odd.

You could also consider doing a lighter floor but doing the dark inlay or boarder inlay, especially if you have a hallway separating the two areas. It depends on the layout and visable floor space you have.

I like a consistent look, so I'd keep the stain dark throughout. If you're concerned with it being too much dark, get some lighter area rugs/hallway runner so you have some contrast between the dark floor and dark furniture. That way you won't have a sea of brown blending everything together.

You could also lighten it up a little bit as long as you make sure the undertones are the same, ie. don't go too red compared to the existing stain.

Something to consider: if you switch to bamboo or another hardwood, your stain may not match exactly, even if you have a custom match done because all woods take stain differently.
