Wood Furniture

Can one mix different wood types - how is that done? I have a maple coffee table and chestnut chest of drawers and would like to purchase an armoir and do not know what type of wood to go with/or stain? My tableis dark auburn and the chest is medium. Walls are Crouissant by Pratt and Lambert. Furniture has gold, burgandy, and sage green (plaid) with a moss green deck creating a two tone effect.

Thanks,

Hopeful

Thank you very much for the advice. I was thinking of Pine for armouir, and staining it a light colour - you have confirmed that it makes sense.

Those sound like great suggestions. I have always wondered what the rule is for mixing woods myself. I have a sort of brownish cherry finish in my living room and an oak finish in the dining room, which is all in the same area. I also have a deep dark brown desk area near the dining room area. It seems to work but eventually I am going to invest in a new dining room table.

I think the idea with the worn milky look sounds great!

You can mix up your woods as long as they are not too close in colour. Try to make sure that the colours are really far apart so that it doesn't look as though you were trying to match them up and didn't quite make it. Or, how about an armoir with a painted finish? You could choose the burgundy or the green from you fabric. If you have a relaxed room, use a milk-paint (or a paint with low sheen) and sand out the edges as though worn. Then wax over it all to give it durability. Or, you can purchase painted cabinets in an off white or creamy colour that may work fine.
