Wood mixing?

I asked this question awhile ago on the old forum before some posts were erased. I can't remember the responses so I might as well ask it again.

I have really dark hardwood floors, a blurry pic is included. What kind of wood can I add to the space? I do not like light woods or golden woods. Would I be able to stay in the same range as the wood floors if I add area rugs? Can I also mix different woods?

The pic I posted is of the diningroom but this wood is throughout the family and livingrooms as well.

In the diningroom I have a hutch to work with that was inherited. It is roughly the color of the rocking chair in the second pic posted. Right now, I cannot refinish it so I have to deal with it. I don't what kind of wood would go with that either!

Any suggestions on either question?

Thanks Junebug, yes I meant wood furniture. I don't want the place to look too dark but I prefer darker woods and didn't want it to feel too closed in or dreary by having it.

I do have to work with the hutch in the dining room so I am not sure what kind of wood would go with it. I have been gravitating towards ebony/espresso woods so hopefully the hutch wouldn't look too out of place.

I don't have any furniture picked out right now. But I find I am all over the place with what I like. Some woods have a more red tone to it and some are almost black. I don't want to be too all over the place so I am trying to streamline my thoughts before I am set free with a credit card. ;)

Thanks for your help!

...wood for furniture? i think you could go either way. you could use white furniture for a clean, fresh look. the hutch you talk about would be a great accent piece against it all.
or you could use darker wood. in that case, an area rug in lighter tones would be a must so that the furntiure doesn't flow into the floor. just don't mix it up too much so tha tyou have many different tones of wood. pick one for your furntiure and stick to it (eg. cherry wood or ebony) and, again, use your inherited piece an accent or focal point...
what pieces were you thinking of specifically?
