Wood or Stone Flooring for kitchen

I have a galley kitchen visible from the front hall, the dining room and the family room. The family room (which is three steps down from the kitchen) has medium brown coloured oak flooring. The rest of the flooring in the house is honey coloured oak. (The family room is a recent addition and that is why we used a different colour flooring - it has always been our intention to redo the colour of the floors in the rest of the house.) I am now ready to refinish and match the colour of all my wood flooring to that of the family room's. Here is my dilema - I have been thinking of replacing the oak flooring in my (small) front hall with some sort of polished stone tiles in natural tones and wonder if I should continue that flooring into the kitchen or whether I should keep the oak floor in that room and just restain it to match the family and dining rooms. Oh, the kitchen cabinets are honey coloured maple. I am just not sure how the darker brown oak will look against the honey maple cabinets. Any advice, anyone??

For what it is worth, we just built a new house and put dark gray/black slate in the kitchen. Our cabinets are natural maple and we have natural maple hardwood in the living room. I didn't want a maple floor with maple cabinets. It was a difficult decision to put in such a dark floor, but I absolutely love it. The slate was sealed by the builder and we will have to reseal it in 5 years. It is easy to mop up as well. While the gray/black may not be a good choice considering the colour of your hardwood, you may wish to look at the slate which contains more brown and gold colour. We also have the slate in the mudroom and it works great. At our front entrance we have limestone which looks great with the maple hardwood , but I don't think the light limestone would look as great with my cabinets. Hope that helps.
