Hey all,
I was out and about this weekend in some of the residential downtown areas and found myself on Dundas St. W near Ossington. Now, if anyone knows Toronto well, they can tell you that this is a bustling hive for the Portuguese community and I duly noted almost every single car was adorned with their nations flag, in true spirit of the games over in Germany.
Seeing as those Portuguese will be very happy now that they beat the Holland team to go through, I have to ask.... anybody here following the soccer now (now that hockey is gone for another few months!) and who are you following/why and what are your thoughts both on the games themselves, but also the fan behaviour (the aforementioned neighbourhood already had one bit of rowdiness going on a few days ago).
For me personally, soccer is more a game to play than to watch and I don't actively follow any team. I have a lingering feeling of pride for the English team, so if anyone, then I'd support them.

That is an awesome story Jeep, that picture has got to be soooo cute, i bet they frame it and hang it up on the wall, can you imagine this little boy growing up and showing his friends that pic. WOW! :D
Sorry for hijacking this but had to tell you that the Stanley Cup was in town on the weekend and my boss was so excited. I was away so I didn't see it but he has pictures of his 6 month old son sitting in the Cup ( he is best friends with the player that won it ).
I don't really follow Soccer (more of a hockey fan, me) good ole canadian girl here but............i love to see all the fans get excited about the soccer games and i have to say because i look after a little portugese boy, (mom portugese dad, Irish) His little face just lights up when i say "Yeah Portuga!!" His mom also has a portugese flag on her van. It is great to see all the comradery (sp)? amongst all the fans. It is all very exciting! :)
any team in particular, but as a Scot, DOWN WITH ENGLAND lol (sorry philb just joking )
as a woman, I support cute butts in shorts - and even saw Argentina in the 70s, my that was a game that was !
We folliow all sports in this house Hockey is #1 but the Sports Channel is on most of the time. I don't really follow any team but have seen some of the games not the whole game just parts and will follow it thru I suppose deep down we do cheer for England and they do have a Canadian boy from Calgary on their team.
not followed the game, but then again i really dont with any sport....DH normally just fills me in with the hockey games. However, i have seen many sporting thier flags, which i think is really cool. DD has a male teacher who loves sports, so they did watch some in class and was assigned a project on the games...........had to write about one of the countries, hers was Argentina......thier favorite foods and religion and do a biography on one of the Argentina players and keep records of the games played........so i think a good lesson :)

dude i'm a porkchop!!!!!....Portugese Rule!!!....Cristiano is the bomb!!!...i don't have any flags on my car cuz ummmm that would be tacky...and besides the red and green would clash with my yellow car...my dad however does have a portugese flag on his van...BUT...he will NOT put the portugese flag on his van without a Canadian one too...he says he may have been born there but Canada is his country now...so i thought that was pretty cool of my daddy...but we did watch Portugal play on Sunday after the party and lemme tell ya...i think i need to get the springs repaired on my couch now...my daddy was bouncing and jumping like you wouldn't believe...it was so cute...but i've been watching Portugal play since the beginning...and i will watch to the end...and if Portugal gets knocked out...i will from then on be a Brazilian...LOL...all pork chops convert that way
oh and Phil..next time you're done there you gotta go into the porkchop bakeries ....they're AWESOME!!!
I'm an england fan!
why?
#1: DH's from England... gotta support him
#2: David Beckham.
#3: Manchester was my fav. league team
That's about it... I love the sport, mainly cuz it's pretty fast paced, and I understand it. Unlike football which takes FOREVER and I don't understand the scoring standard at all.
It's soccer mania here as well. Everyone and every car is adorning their flags. I think it is great!
I do not follow soccer but I sure remember the fans when I lived in England for a year!
I think it is great to see all the different country flags adorn around the city in support of their homeland teams!
I guess it is really the only real wide world sport!
I do find the fans are sooo into it compared to other sports and I am sure there are alot more well behaved fans than disbehaved ones( we just happen to hear about the bad :) )
I know alot of people who only watch when it comes to the World Cup. :D
