Worse than trying on a bathing suit is trying on wedding dresses. Yes, I’m getting married in March and I’m delighted but I had no idea how frustrating and humiliating it would be to find a white dress. I’m getting married on a beach in the Caribbean so I just wanted to wear a simple white dress. My boyfriend proposed in December last year and we decided we would go away and get married during March break when the kids are out of school. I’m almost 40 and usually a size 12, maybe a 13/14. My boyfriend is wearing white so I was going to wear white…pure white. Apparently, I had no idea, that 90% of wedding dresses are ivory or off white! I had no clue. Secondly, many bridal shops don’t carry inventory and it takes FOUR MONTHS to order the dress of your dreams. Thirdly, when did wedding dresses get so expensive! A good price is something like $700 and the average is over $1000! Fourthly, I never noticed that most wedding dresses are strapless! Ok, that’s like me wearing a tube top. I look terrible in strapless and wouldn’t dream of wearing it on my wedding day. Not a flattering neckline for top heavy me. Is it me…I just thought the bridal industry would have more variety. Does everyone just want an ivory, strapless beaded ball gown? ? And the final straw, bridal gowns are made at least 1 – 2 sizes SMALLER than North American sizes. Meaning if you’re a size 14, you’re looking at bridal dresses in size 16 or higher. How’s that for increasing personal morale. And then they have these change rooms that have no mirrors inside and you have to go out in the big room full of mirrors and other people sitting there and other little 20 something brides while they shift and sort to adjust this and adjust that….sigh. I hated it. I felt like a whale in a fish bowl. Well, I pretty well had enough and I’m just going to find a seamstress to make me a dress so I can feel beautiful again. Thanks for listening.
Ps. I strongly recommend Little White Dress.com on Orfus Rd. Beautiful dresses, all for $299. If I was looking for that ballgown..I’d go there.

thanks for the best wishes! I didn't know Sears sold wedding dresses..!I've been looking in dress shops and have had some success but nothing solid. Everyone says come back in a couple weeks when the spring stuff is out...hard to find a white dress in January but I'm sure something will come up. Thanks again for listening.
I planned to get married on the beach too - in Mauritius - although when we arrived we discovered the beach wasn't very nice so we wound up getting married on the side of the mountain overlooking everything in the garden of a lovely little restaurant.
Anyway - I was living in Zimbabwe at the time - talk about no options for shopping - lol - so I had a friend make my dress and I've never regretted it. It was what I wanted, fit me, and had great memories attached to it.
I didn't want to sweat all through the day, so I realized cotton lawn sleeveless under a lace overgown was going to be much cooler than the traditional satin, and an ankle length hankerchief hem kept the sand from clumping up on the hem of a longer gown. Just my thoughts.
I hope you have a wonderful happy wedding and marriage.
Congratulations!
I think it's the style now for bridal gowns to be strapless, I know when I went shopping for a dress they only had 1 or 2 styles available that were strapless. Have you thought about getting a dress made? That way you can pick what you want and it will be fit to your body and no-one elses. You still need to do that in advance though and not leave it to the last minute.
Pure white isn't that flattering on most people that's why you're probably not seeing too much of pure white in the stores.
Congratulations! Jalan...Here are a couple from www.sears.ca both are under $200.00:)
how about looking for the evening dress in white? go to the stores that sell them, no bridal dresses.
