Thanks for all the help re: pic attaching. I found out that size does matter!!! however I suddenly realized that this picture is exactly what I don't want...and after looking at all of the beautiful gardens you guys have created on your own...I know I have come to the right place. I am about to finish some concrete work around the base of my porch and look forward to getting into the garden project by Monday, rain or shine. Here is really what I am looking for...Shrubs, small or compact which offer something for all year interest...either combining flowering with evergreens, vines or whatever. These foundation plants will fill a raised (34") bed along the front of my house, divided by a porch almost centered, shade side is about 12ft long and sunny side is about 15 ft long. There lies the challenge...I am trying to create some balance either with colour, shape or same plants which thrive in almost opposite climates with this western exposure...the old evergreens and varigated euyonomous did well ...Does anyone have a climbing hydrangea, a ruby glow berberi and do all boxwoods need trimming? or do some really keep that roundish shape. What do they look like in winter? The garden centers now have so many versions of my old favourites and I have tried investigating these various latin names and found there must be only one of each. I will trust the advice of my fellow gardeners...Thanks for the help..will post pic of work in progress. Norm
