Yeah, the shortest day of the year

is OVER. We're on the way to spring. This has always been a psychological hurdle for me. The winter days are way too short and dark in the north. Almost instantly they start to feel longer.

I have to tell you that I was mentioning the days getting longer to a 7 yr old neighbour yesterday when her dad, a stickler for detail beyond most I have met, insisted I come in and check it out on the computer (he tends to doubt my facts since I've let him know I don't store certain information unless I deem it particularly useful or amusing while he has a photographic memory). It was kind of funny since I told him I didn't actually care 'exactly when' the equinox was, knowing it was that afternoon was good enough for me, but no, he had to find out and drag me along with him. Well I guess I learned something as he took me to a site that monitors everything down to the nanosecond by different variables, calendars, clocks etc. and wouldn't you know, equinox hit at some exact time in the afternoon. So we were both right and he didn't have to go tell the kid I was mistaken.

Also, for those of you who have depression etc. My doctor (holistic) tells me that I am supposed to get a minimum of 30 minutes of direct sunlight a day as it is a proven method to elevate mood. No sunglasses, no sunscreen as the light must be absorbed by your skin and eyes. There are a few reasons not the least of which is the vit D works better with other things in your body to improve mood. So there are some very good and scientific reasons people need good light for mood and that some people find themselves particularly sensitive.

He also had me start on some vitamins that work really well, change my diet, and a few other things. I haven't taken an anitdepressant since I started going to him 4 years ago.

Hello Foxxy
I just started a few containers of seeds and I will wait a bit yet to do some more.I somehow find it soothing to plant these plastic containers ,and get them all nestled outside under the snow.Somehow it makes me feel that Spring will get here faster.LOL.Whatever works huh?

I have a S.A.D. lamp as well and use it most mornings. There was an interesting article in our local paper yesterday that they are finding the light from them is successful in depression in new moms , nursing moms and various other ailments in that area. The article also said that people with mild depression can be often weaned off any meds and use just the light source, Even in offices a portable light is very beneficial. :) More and more data that has been collected points toward the benefits of the light for the blahhh's.

Molly no seeds planted yet but I will in February. AWe spring!

I agree with you, janinvan, as I sit here in front of my "sun" lamp as I do every morning! i think I have mentioned before that I have "chronic recurrent major depressive disorder" (phew, that's a mouthful lol) and I also have seasonal affective disorder just to throw a curved ball at me and keep me on my toes !

itsjust me, it has always seemed funny to me, too, that the seasons change in this country by the equinox or solstice, and that yes, we are now officially in winter since the equinox... it always seeems a little behind, and stanage, to me - and I have been in Canada 20 years now lol

But wasn't the official starting date of Winter just the other day, somewhere around 20th December? Don't mean to burst your bubble! But all this time youv'e been rolling around in snow, it has actually still been Fall! :D
