Vinca, is a ground cover and it has beautiful purple flowers....I grow it against the wall to hide the foundation bricks and I trim it to keep it low.

I went a little nuts at different nurseries this year, so I decided to plant my own planters and baskets - I planted 2 window boxes, 4 hanging baskets, one herb pot, 2 urns, and 2 tomato pots and I STILL have plants left over! Everything looks a little puny now, but if they turn out half as good as yours wound up, I'll be thrilled! I love your idea of taking a "before" and "after" picture -- I am so going to copy that!!!
I found an annual this year called "Vinca" and I tucked a couple into my herb planter. (Nice glossy leaves) Does anyone know how big they wind up, I don't want them to take over my little basils!
Happy gardening!

hmm.. herbs.. Visually oregano trails nicely, as does thyme. Rosemary gives height. Dill and parsley tends to take over. I hear mint takes over too but I haven't tried it. I put my chives in the ground and it came back this year, it has flowers! I hear people plant garlic, that's cool, I'd like to try that sometime. This year I only planted basil, in between tomatoes, I hear it's good to plant them together as there's some mutual benefits. Can't wait to see your planter!

Karen, those chives' flowers are great with white vinegar by placing them together in a glass jar. Close tight and shake it so often and you'll notice the vinegar turning pinkish.....it is so tasty with salads, you won't need anything else with it except olive oil.

BTW, your planters look really nice

Wonderful combination! It is sure to be beautiful. I'm trying potato vine for the first time this year and I'm really excited about it. I got 2 colours as you did.

Smells so nice but will take over everything plant it only where you don't care about it. MIL had hers for years I mean like 50 years growing under her back porch. They even dug it out when they built a new porch and within a year you couldn't tell they had dug it out.

Thanks karenm, those are great suggestions :)

So do you just stick a clove of garlic in the ground and it'll grow?? Or do you plant the entire garlic bulb?? This could be an interesting experiment :)

I've also heard that planting two different plants together is good for both. I just have no idea which plants are supposed to go with which!!

We'll all have to post pics of our planters halfway through the summer so we can all see how each other is doing :)

Indigo, I'm hoping to go to the nursery tomorrow morning and buy a whack of plants!! I already have a big cobalt blue planter on the front porch, so some dirt and plants and I'll be good to go :)

I like basil too :) And cilantro, although I've heard some weird descripitons of the flavour. My brother thinks it tastes like metal, and a guy on my softball team thinks it tastes like wet mowed grass. Don't ask me how they know what those things taste like, especially the grass!! :hurl:

Any suggestions for other herbs to plant??

Karen, nice planter you have going there, I'm curious to see how it comes out as well:) and thank you for labelling the plants:)

I have two urns on the side porch that are black cast and I actually like the rust they have acquired. Gives them a nice age worn look.

Smoodgie, smart thinking to use herbs. The smell of herbs are more pleasing to me than that of a flower and powerful as well. My favourite is basil and cilantro...yuuummm, yuuummm! If you feel up to it share your planter when its up and coming:) I think your plans will make for an interesting visual display.

It'll be interesting to see how the container looks when all the flowers are in bloom :) I seem to recall you had a problem with your containerdoing TOO well last summer?! Love your square container, by the way :)

I'm going to try something new in my big porch container -- purple fountain grass in the center with impatiens around it, interspersed with some herbs. I figure the herbs will add some greenery and scent, and actually be useful :)

I have the same ones from the Superstore/Loblaw's and they are zinc...they do not rust. Mine was out all last winter.
I fill the bottom part with some styrofoam peanuts as if I filled it totally with soil
I could never move it.
Mine are in part shade so I have impatiens plus some lobelia and sweet potato vine and a tall thingy like a palm. Will be interesting to see how big the sun loving plants get in part shade. :)
p.s. punch some holes on the side about 1" up from the bottom so there is drainage as in a good rain they will overflow.

I am sure it will be great is your container a metal one I have been looking at them and I like them just wondering about rusting.
