Yet another Painting IKEA MALM question?

I was under the impression that there are primers on the market now that can be used without having to sand first. Has anyone tried them and if so what are they called? My question is similar to the other person who posted on here except I want to buy new MALM furniture and the White finish is the cheapest seeing as I'm planning on painting it. Except the White finish is very hard and very, very shiny. I have painted over the old style melamine finishes of 20 years ago with success but not this really shiny finish that IKEA has. I want to go for a white-washed antique look.

Anyone have any comments? Also I keep seeing this BIN primer being mentioned in some of the posts. What is this? Is it a brand name or a generic name? (forgive me as I've lived out of country for a long time).

BULLS EYE 1-2-3, a product made by Zinsser. It's an interior-exterior, white pigmented, water-based primer/sealer/stain killer. It says right on the can that it "adheres to glossy surfaces without sanding or deglossing". I used it for a plain white Ikea bookshelf, an old one.

I would still recommend a good cleaning to the piece to ensure that there are no oils, like those from hands. To keep my project simple I purchased a small spray bottle of a TSP cleaner. I didn't want to fuss with one that was in a powder form that I'd have to mix.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your project.
