“I think of a tree as sculpture rather than something to suffocate with ornaments,” says homeowner Janaki Larsen of the family’s sparsely decorated spruce. Janaki also traded a traditional skirt for a metal bucket, keeping the focus on the beautiful colour of the tree.
While less traditional than the go-to evergreen, a white tree is a fun way to highlight candy-coloured vintage ornaments. Underneath, gifts wrapped in white paper blend in with the scheme, and a mix of pastel and jewel-toned ribbons play up the hues of the bright decorations.
Designer Jennifer Worts keeps her family room relaxed for her 6-year-old son. Multicoloured lights and mix-and-match ornaments add a soft glow to the space. Accented with Fraser fir wreaths, the black window frames pop against white walls. Pink ribbons pick up the shades of pink elsewhere in the room.
Gifts wrapped in exotic patterns and rich jewel tones complement this living room’s palette. Vintage ornaments and felted yellow birds keep the look personal, and tie in with the birds in the chair fabric.
The 9-1/2′ Christmas tree, decorated simply with chartreuse and gold ornaments, a grapevine-twig garland and about 2,000 white twinkle lights, serves as a festive focal point in the great room. Gifts wrapped in kraft paper and tied with green and gold ribbons are in keeping with homeowner Pauline Esdale’s simple, natural holiday theme.
The 12-foot tree in designer and HGTV host Sarah Richardson‘s farmhouse living room was cut down on their property by Sarah’s husband. Loaded with ornaments, both old and new, the tree stands between the dining room and living room, allowing it to be seen from many vantage points. The warm colour scheme of red, orange and cream in the space creates a cosy feeling, perfect for a country home.
All-white decorations give this pre-lit tree a dreamy quality, bringing a snowy winter wonderland indoors. White-wrapped presents are trimmed with metallic gold and silver ribbon for sparkle. A gilt-framed mirror, candelabra and the glossy dark floor exude luxury and refinement.
This tree’s fluffy branches have been sprayed white to add texture and a snowy effect. Perching it on a wood table makes it even more of a focal point and provides an organic hit. Birch logs stand in the corner as decorative display, bringing some wintry nature indoors.
Subtle pattern and piles of pillows and throws keep an all-white living room from feeling static. In artist Heather Shaw’s space, a striped ottoman and floral chair break up the scheme. To keep the look relaxed (and kids at ease) use washable sofa and chair slipcovers. White lights and decorations on the tree add low-key sparkle.

Sarah loves to throw an intimate holiday dinner for friends every year. Here, she enlists the help of a ceramic stool to finish trimming her tree with sparkling glass ornaments with hits of green and turquoise — an unconventional holiday scheme.
This living room’s simple, traditional fireplace is based on an 18th-century design. Evergreens are draped atop the mantel for a classic holiday look. The tree’s rich navy ornaments pick up on the blue gingham upholstered bench.
This airy, welcoming foyer — open to the family and living rooms — is large enough to hold a Christmas tree without disrupting flow. The homeowners’ daughters decorate the tree with ornaments they make or collect during family vacations. Original to the house, the diamond-patterned inlaid-oak floor offers natural warmth, while two iconic pendant lights add sculptural presence.
A luxurious white feather boa and jewel-like ornaments on the Christmas tree work with the apartment’s elegant mix of soft whites, cool blues and lots of shine. Collecting Christmas decorations, like the ones inherited from her grandmother, has been a lifelong hobby for Mens. The generous Ikea shelving system in this living room keeps things organized while offering plenty of space to display family photos, vases and bowls.
Elegant striped wrapping paper on the presents add a jaunty, tailored note to an old-world style Christmas tree. A magnolia-leaf garland, decorated with simple white ornaments and pine cones, adorns the mantle.
Red birds and sparkling white snowflake ornaments perfectly reflect the natural surroundings of this outdoor tree.
This tree strikes a ritzy note that needs little embellishment, so forgo the classic trimmings and simply string it with twinkling white lights. The look is simple to achieve and drop-dead chic. A Louis ghost chair by Philippe Starck for Kartell continues the mod aesthetic.
A mix of new and vintage ornaments dress this glowing tree. Its stand fits inside a galvanized wash bucket that the owner outfitted with casters for instant portability.
An original woodburning fireplace and white stucco walls offer a simple backdrop for holiday trimmings. A small urn filled with pinecones and branches layer in greenery that will last all season. A photograph of one of the homeowner’s great-grandmother hangs over the fire, while his great-grandparents’ travel chest stores firewood.
In this living room, a Barcelona chair by Mies van der Rohe from the owner’s old city condo plays counterpoint to the traditional columns and tufted ottoman. Lemon-lime ornaments match the chartreuse ribbon on the gifts.
