Photo Gallery: 2010 Princess Margaret Showhome
Sitting peacefully on a leafy corner in Oakville, the 2010 Princess Margaret Showhome is inspired by seaside destinations such as the Hamptons, Cape Cod and Chester, N.S., where cedar-shingle exteriors, inviting verandas and gabled roofs define the picturesque houses.
Hefty Doric columns support the covered porch, creating a classic yet casual first impression. With oversized coach lights on either side of the front door and stained cedar shakes, the showhome presents a classic, refined façade. The porch’s natural wood will weather into a beautiful patina.
Ivory white walls play off ebony-stained oak floors in the centre hallway near the Showhome entrance. A bleached-oak pedestal table and black iron hanging lantern define the space.
A daring colour palette, large windows and an incredibly high ceiling all contribute to the jaw-dropping style of the open concept living room. Patterned pillows in crisp blue and white bring decorative punch to the home’s clean, uncluttered aesthetic and timeless furniture. Breezy sightlines between rooms maintain an airy feel.
The library exudes a sense of comfort and luxury. The handsome built-ins, weighty drapes, leather chairs and brass lighting keep the space classic and masculine.
The dining room tempers matching chintz upholstery and drapes with a dark table and simple iron chandelier. The Welsh dresser was painted light taupe and filled with matching dishes for a graphic tone-on-tone effect. A sturdy woven rug grounds the space and protects the dark wood floors.
Decked out with the latest stainless steel appliances, this kitchen is any homeowner’s dream. Marble countertops and a white beadboard ceiling balance cool grey walls and cabinets. Crystal lamps and a hanging lantern add a decorative layer and sparkle. A rustic farmhouse table replaces the ubiquitous island and the floor’s Bluestone pavers evoke the charm of a cobblestone street.
Dark paver stone floor and glossy wicker chairs made the sunroom a crowd-pleaser. The sofa is softly upholstered, with a bench seat and exposed welted seams. The bright red found on the cushions and rug add buoyant colour to the space.
In the principal bedroom, quince green accents are surrounded by neutral browns and bold paisley prints. The classic platform bed from Crate & Barrel has beautiful nailhead detail and a soft, linen upholstered headboard. Distressed oak lamps add a rugged feel to the casual space.
Pairing floor-length drapes with a freestanding oval tub establishes the ensuite bathroom as both elegant and tranquil. An overhead chandelier and acrylic side table add the perfect amount of sparkle to space.
The principal bedroom includes one of the biggest walk-in closets ever featured in a showhome. The custom cabinetry, designed by California Closets, offers ample floor-to-ceiling storage. Crystal knobs, richly upholstered benches and mirrored doors exude luxury, while lined drawers for jewelery make staying organized a cinch.
The principal bathroom is a casually elegant, monochromatic space. The custom-made vanity with marble top is polished and easy to care for, and the walls and floor are covered in tiles for added texture. The beautiful mirror features a Blue Vision Mirror TV that only appears when it’s turned on, allowing the homeowners to watch television while getting ready to go out.
Buttercream walls with floral chintz create a romantic escape for overnight visitors. Raffia inserts and exposed nail heads make the bed look like an antique. The nubbly wool rug and printed linen drapes add cosy texture to the space.
The double vanity’s marble countertop sits on a chunky chrome base and is topped by two tilting mirrors. A black shower curtain grounds the space and provides visual contrast.
Dark and light play against each other with ebony wood beds and a pastel colour palette. The textured, round rug provides softness underfoot in the centre of the room, while layers of patterned fabric keep the space classic and feminine.
The mudroom is a well-designed service entry equipped with a shower for rinsing off boots or showering the dog. Custom cabinetry offers plenty of storage while a built-in bench provides a practical place to sit. The heated blue stone pavers covering the floor are durable and low-maintenance.
The lower-level living room has a youthful, casual style. Touches of chocolate brown, soft grey and cream dominate the space. An Ikea sectional and chair, as well as upholstered bench cushions, bring high contrast to the room while offering ample seating.
This room feels cosy thanks to a warm espresso colour scheme and layers of sumptuous bedding. Textured grasscloth on the walls adds dimension to the space.
The laundry room in the lower-level of the Showhome features soft green tiles and crisp white built-in cabinetry from Ikea. A sewing table and open shelving make household chores a breeze, and the generous sink is perfect for flower arranging. The mangle rotary iron is a state-of-the-art appliance for pressing sheets and other large items in seconds.
Front-loading appliances are a smart way to create additional workspace, as their flat tops are perfect for folding and sorting laundry. The soft stainless steel finish on the washer and dryer is repeated on the custom-made laundry bar, which can be used to hang delicates. The natural slate floor is durable and beautiful.
The spacious back deck of the 2010 Princess Margaret Showhome is accessible from the great room and kitchen, through a pair of classic French doors. The large wood table from Crate & Barrel is expandable to accommodate numerous guests.
