Photo Gallery: Dramatic Bathrooms
Design details that make a statement.
Bathrooms don’t have to be bland, as this one shows with its glittery marble mosaic-tiled floor, glass-droplet chandelier and pretty Schumacher wallpaper. A custom-designed vanity features double sinks and built-in storage, a marble countertop and panel moulding that smartly blends two mirrors in the insets. The low, freestanding tub makes the room feel more spacious and opulent.
Hardwood floors, a wool rug and an Art Deco cabinet — originally a dining room sideboard — aren’t elements you would typically find in a bathroom. Here, though, they create an inviting atmosphere that feels like a spa suite at a luxurious hotel. A large frameless mirror creates the illusion of a bigger space, while minimal decor lets the wood and mirrors achieve full impact.
Matte black paint on panelled walls, paired with a black clawfoot tub, is an unexpectedly elegant and refreshing change from predictable, white marble bathrooms. French door-style windows add even more high-end appeal.
Overseas, where square footage tends to be at more of a premium than in North America, bathrooms are often designed as one open space with floor-to-ceiling tile. This mod bathroom features a low, black bathtub beside the shower in a single glass-partitioned space. A smartly designed, built-in shelf stores bottles and soaps.
Designers Matt Carr and Joyce Lo boosted the Old-World appeal of their Victorian home’s bathroom by adding antique gold accessories to work with the textured wall and chair rail, hex-tiled floor and black pedestal bathtub. The result is a one-of-a-kind, vintage look.
A petite bathroom looks instantly larger, thanks to marble used extensively through the space. By covering the tub surround, backsplash and floors with the same material, the homeowner created a seamless look that visually extends the room. The stainless steel mirror mounted over the sink adds sparkle and depth to the room, while the framed photos offer character and clean-lined sophistication.
Floor to ceiling, damask-patterned Bisazza tiles with an opalescent sheen make a statement in this large bathroom. Using a nook by a picture window for a freestanding bathtub adds more drama, while an oversized feather chandelier completes the luxe, feminine look. Top of the line finishes such as these eliminate the need for any further accessories.
This freestanding bathtub, situated in a gracefully bowed window, echoes the architectural lines of the space to dramatic effect. The panelling on the tub surround repeats the understated traditional moulding found on the vanity, while the contemporary fixtures and towel rack keep the space from looking old-fashioned.
An oversized mirror and floating marble vanity create an instant focal point for this dramatic powder room. Plus, the mirror reflects both light and the fireplace situated opposite it. Rich details, such as the gorgeous fixtures, hardware, and plush seating, emphasize the sense of refinement and grandeur.
A Persian carpet is an unusually luxurious choice for a bathroom, but stands up well to wear and tear. An antique wrought-iron chandelier from Europe illuminates the tub area. To the left, a display cabinet stores towels, bath accessories and cleaning products.
Small powder rooms offer the opportunity to play with strong colour and pattern without throwing off a whole house’s palette or mood. When incorporating wallpaper with a strong pattern, keep other finishes and accessories simple, like the glass light fixtures and creamy limestone floor here.
Grey and white mosaic tile make a graphic statement in this contemporary ensuite, outfitted with a sleek curved tub.

A stunning bathroom filled with antiques, an 1890’s chandelier, gilded marble-topped Louis XVI table, a pine mantle fireplace and room for seating, exudes warmth and French charm.
Wrapped in wide ribbons of iridescent tile, this bathroom is an ode to mosaics. The wetroom’s slick, clean-lined fixtures and transparent glass door hold their own next to the bold stripes.
There’s no traditional vanity in this spectacular bathroom, but a wall-mounted sink with exposed plumbing makes a great counterpoint to a footed wood cabinet. Black-and-white basket-weave floor tiles and extra-high baseboards look crisp against walls painted in a metallic bronze tone.
A beautiful bathroom with painted floorboards exudes elegance with art and artifacts, including a silver candelabrum, antique chest of drawers, ornate lamp with pleated shade and delicate glass urns.
Classic elements such as Carrara marble and a hand-painted tub surround make this bathroom the epitome of elegance. Understated but timeless touches, such as the handheld shower, chandelier and window hardware, add to the Old-World ambiance of the space. French-style windows with simple linen shades also emphasize the sleek lines of the room.
