Photo Gallery: Patio Makeover
How Suzanne Dimma & Sabrina Linn created an oasis.
BEFORE Natural fibre area rugs weren’t enough to warm up this balcony. Wrought iron furniture didn’t have enough heft and presence against the glass and steel backdrop, either.
AFTER Affordable acacia wood tiles—laid on top of the existing concrete—create a dramatic cabana effect. A rectangular table and painted chairs also provide plenty of seating. “The bubble chandelier is one of my favourite pieces,” adds homeowner Sabrina Linn. “It was under $50. I see it more as a piece of art since it’s so sculptural even when it’s not on.”
BEFORE “The terrace was long,” says Sabrina. “We wanted to divide the space cleverly so that it would suit a few purposes. Lounging was a huge priority. The other was including a dining space, because the inside of the apartment had no traditional dining table.”
AFTER The clamshell lounger canopy provides shelter on sunny days as well as a perfect perch to watch the sunset over cocktails at night. Pillows in summer shades with fresh white piping (available via custom order through Sabrina) add punch to an otherwise neutral, white-and-wood palette.
BEFORE Without colour or furniture, the view outside was drab. Dimma and Sabrina knew that the makeover would need to work with the redecorated indoor space, which was quite light and airy with a 60’s vibe.
AFTER White accessories pop against natural materials, such as the acacia wood floor tiles and bamboo chairs. The clean palette matches the indoor area, making the balcony appear as an extension to the living room.
