Photo Gallery: Small Spaces By Sabrina Albanese

A room's footprint may be small, but designer Sabrina Albanese always delivers major impact. Check out 14 of Albanese's projects (all under 1,500 square feet), from downtown Toronto to Boca Raton, Florida, that demonstrate the power of thinking big.

  • Traditional Kitchen

Hits of vibrant colour create a fun and lively look.

In this kitchen Boca Raton, Florida, Toronto designer Sabrina Albanese used neutral tones "to create flow and a sense of openness," while bright red pendant lights and dining chairs add energy. "I added pops of colour for some playful interest," she says.

  • Chic Master Ensuite

A neutral palette establishes a serene vibe.

This tranquil master ensuite looks larger thanks to light tones on the walls, floors and furnishings. "Soft colours mixed with various natural textures not only looks elegant, but also feels light and airy," explains Sabrina. "The glass partitions allow light to travel through, while creating a sense of privacy."

  • Handsome Office Nook

    Graphic wallpaper makes a statement.

Sabrina used a textured geometric wallcovering in this compact workspace, "to the give the illusion of receding walls." She then installed a floating shelf in the same tone. "It creates a monochromatic feel," she explains, which also makes the space feel larger than it really is.

  • Airy Dining Room

Minimal decor and light walls make this space feel open.

In this small dining area, Sabrina used minimal furnishings and a light palette to make the space feel larger and brighter. "Painting the trim same colour as the wall creates subtle texture," she says. "Overall, the room is fresh and casually elegant with soft natural textures of linen and wool surrounding the dining table."

  • Peaceful Master Bedroom

Grey walls contrast nicely with light furnishings.

"The shell of this bedroom is all dark — the walls and drapes are a soft graphite colour — and all the furnishings and linens are light," explains Sabrina. This  creates the illusion of receding walls and a more spacious atmosphere. "The bed is also low profile, which makes the ceilings feel higher," she says.

  • Urban Living Room

A clean-lined sectional is stylish and practical.

"Every piece of furniture must have purpose in a small living space, with each piece speakly fluidly with the next," observes Sabrina. In this Toronto living room, a low-slung sectional, compact armchair and ottoman provide plenty of seating and don't distract from stunning city views.

  • Edgy Home Office

Unexpected accents give this workspace personality.

Sabrina doesn't shy away from bold choices, even in small spaces. This home office features an exotic animal hide rug, sculptural desk, and custom Batman-themed bookshelf. "I love finding clever ways to store books and stationary, like kitschy wall-mounted shelving," she says.

  • Bright Eat-in Kitchen

This space takes full advantage of natural light.

In this Boca Raton, Florida, eat-in kitchen, Albanese mixed different seating styles for added interest. She also ensured that the space would feel open and airy by installing Chevron linen sheers by Schumacher over the large windows. "They maximize light and create brightness in the space," she says.

Generous cabinetry keeps everything in order.

Neutral cabinets, subway tile and countertops establish a classic envelope in this smaller Florida kitchen, while patterned dishes, red containers, and a bright blue kettle strike a lighthearted note.

  • Dramatic Powder Room

Glam tile makes this small bathroom really shine.

Small spaces, like this downtown Toronto bathroom, are perfect for trying out bolder design moves. "The mirrored surface of this mosaic wall gives an illusion of more space," Sabrina explains, "and the black decorative accents create romance and drama."

  • Elegant Sitting Area

A blend of materials creates a luxe effect.

"Adding layers of different shapes, colours and textures is important to add interest in a small space," Sabrina advises. In this pretty sitting area, she mixed a sculptural branch-like side table with a classic armchair and plush throw for a rich, layered look.

  • Feminine Dining Area

A flowery pendant light has a lighthearted look.

Sabrina mixed different kinds of seating around a rustic table to give this small dining room a hip look. A refined palette of cream and soft grey on the walls, drapes and upholstery tempers the more feminine tufted stool and floral accents.
