There were a handful of users that had the wrong settings applied to them, and this restricted them from posting. This has been corrected, and you should have no further problems. Please let me know if that's not the case.

I can't post anything new to the Decorating Forum.  I've been away from the boards for several weeks.  What an unpleasant surprise to see what a non-user-friendly mess they've become.  Not sure if it's worth the trouble to keep coming back...

It's funny but the one thing I DO seem to be able to do is log in without much trouble.  As for the rest...

And I hate the way our replies end up INSIDE the box when we quote someone.  It's hard to tell where the OP's quote ends and the reply begins -- or that there even IS a reply.

ETA: Nevermind, it didn't happen this time.  The last time I tried to quote someone, I couldn't get my reply outside the box no matter how hard I tried.  This time, it just happened automatically.  Either they've fixed something or it's just plain flaky.

And another thing (I feel like a nag), what happened to all our cute little designations, like "forum guru", and the number of posts we've had?  Now we're all the same, whether we joined a minute ago or five years ago.  Not that I'm trying to be elitist, but I tend to put more credence in the opinion of the people who've been around a while.  But that's just me.

It would appear that the problems here are insurmountable. So much so that they find it impossible to keep up to our enquiries. Now I know about what cyberspace means. Posts gone - poof!

Tech people - Mike and others - please don't ignore us?

I have the same message "you are not allowed to add new content". It strikes me that such a thing is not conducive to a well functioning message board. Sarcasm intended.

I'm a member at quite a few sites - and have weathered quite a few software changes and updates at most of them. This, by far, is the worst I've ever seen (and i've seen a couple of doozies). There are so many issues I am forced to assume that House and Home has been sold a bill of goods - this software seems to be in the early stages of development - not a mature application ready for general use.

If H&H doesn't want to lose the boards and members it needs to do something - FAST.

Aside: I don't recall even receiving notice that the boards were going through a change or upgrade. Did I miss it?

edited to add: There seems to be no way out of a thread - other than to scroll back to the top of the page and click on the individual forums at the top left corner. Not good.

Hey, what's going on?

Every forum I go into says 'you are not allowed to add new content'. Also a thread I started the other day has vanished. Just poof, thin air. Perhaps someone could explain what is going on so I don't waste anymore time typing things when they disappear anyway. If we had some idea of what the timelines are for getting things figured out it might save some of us some frustration.

cherylallismom I can tell you that I was asked to check out the test forum so I imagine were a few others. Meanwhile the comments I'm seeing are aligning with what I thought about it all. I guess we get to wait and see how many of the comments they take seriously. To me this really isn't very user friendly considering the type of forum this has been with oodles of pictures, follow up, etc. I dare anyone to find things anymore since I don't see even a search function anywhere (if there is one maybe someone can point me in the right direction). That's a lot of rich info and probably dozens of 'before' type threads we can't access any more when it would have been nice to continue them.

There are so many things not working here, it's hard to know where to begin:

- Today's Posts only show one post.  There have been many more

- No hovering over a topic

- I am not allowed to start a New Topic.  This is the third time I've reported this as have others.  Please explain rather than ignore the issue

- when posting it immediately go to Preview Comment & then gets posted twice when you rehit Post comment.

- Ancient posts are near the top of the list of threads.

- Log in is extemely slow

- Are there any Moderators?

- miss seeing who is online

- Where are the photos?

- This is a barren & stark looking site now.  Please don't take that as an invitation to add more drop downs from your advertisers.

- WORST - when we post comments, no explanation, or even a polite reponse, is being given from the tech &/or admin staff.  It would be even better if you attempted to explain what you are doing before we flounder around.

Just found my way back in here. My bookmark wasn't working so I decided to get to the forums the long way and, lo and behold, what do I find? New software and forms. Wow. I had no idea this was coming. Did I miss the memo?

I can't say I care for the new layout. Each post seems to take up an inordinate amount of space - and the ads interspersed within the posting column make for a lot of scrolling. Would it not be possible for them to be lined up down the side?

Anyway - off to have a look around...

H&H notes that orgainzing how you view posts was an important request from some of their top readers.  WHO exactly did you consult?  Not that that particular item isn't useful, but all the regular contributors on here are saying they weren't invited to provide feedback.  So who was invited to?  Readers of the print magazine?  Readers of the online magazine?  Internal staffers?  It does not appear to have been anyone who actually uses the forums with regularity.  Of course, now its too late, as most have said they are done with it for good now.  Too bad, as it was a lively community.

I,too, find this new forum design extremely difficult to navigate.  The lood time is very slow, even on my hubby's new computer, it takes forever.  There is too much negative space.  The print is too small.  I am sorry I won't be able to come here much as I simply do not have that much time to waste waiting for the messages to show.  Let alone trying to find the pictures that go with the questions.  It is just horrible.

Okay - I'm up to the challenge and will give it a try.

However now that I look at this if I hit post comment, it shows the preview box and I have to hit post again. hmmmm

Sorry, Lessismore, I didn't come on the forum yesterday, because I find it too frustrating.

PearlG is right about what SAT stands for (I didn't think I could say the whole name here, but guessed that the forum admins would know what I mean).  Unfortunately, that forum is very inactive -- like I fear this one is about to become.

Mike - what really matters is being able to look at the last post of each item posted. The original post might have been months ago and people are contributing all along. It would be nice to be able to actually start at the last post and go back if needed, rather than have to start at the beginning and slowly ( very slowly) wend your way to the end.

Hi, Poorgirl,

Can you be a bit more specific?

I'm able to read this message, and see what you've posted just fine.

This site is not working for me at all. Sometimes I just want to read what is going on without logging in but the 'Todays Posts' button would not work until I logged in.  Before I logged in, I clicked on the forum tabs on the left side of the page and I got messages from the oldest to the newest so had to scroll through a couple of years worth just to see todays messages.  Tried to change my preference but would not save it until I logged in.

On that note, what is the Flat List and Thread List all about?  Also, expand and what ever else the options are? When I go on Thread List, I don't see the most recent comments, just goes to yesterday and then gets older.  That looks like the only difference.  If I change my preference to Flat List, I get comments made 40 seconds ago, 5 minutes ago, etc.  Confusing.  ( I have not even tried to attach a picture yet)

Okay, so I was not replying specifically to one post...that is a good thing.  However, I was trying to connect to a comment made about SAT.

Can anybody help me out.

I have no idea how to send a private message so I am posting here....wherever that is.  I find it strange that I am replying specifically to you.  Does that mean that I am breaking the thread?  Feels a tad rude but then again this whole format feels very odd to me.  I am wondering what SAT does stand for...can you fill me in.  I would like to try out some other decorating forums.  Thanks.  I do hope that this one evolves into something more appealing.  (less white space, photo friendly etc.)

dustbunnydiva's picture

Interesting. I guess it's hit and miss so while it's hitting I may as well try a new thread or see if I can find the old one to update. Off to explore the possibilities.  If you don't see me again, it means I got slammed out for some reason.

Just testing. This could be a WTF?! After getting 'access denied' too many times to mention I decided to just try and read a new thread and low and behold, it's allowing me to type. So let's see if this posts.

I am so happy to be able to log in.  But I don't like the format very much.  Too much white space - too much scrolling down.  Hopefully things will get better.

Just when I really and truly need design advice the site I trusted for so many years has gone all to HE**. I can't figure anything out and it is not likely that it matters that I do considering not many regular users/posters are going to be around to provide advice.

The site is not user friendly; if you can log in at all. Viewing pictures is nonexistent, navigating is impossible, and wading through posts that are over FIVE years old - from banned users is ridiculous!

House and Home, it takes years to create a brand and it took you mere months to destroy it. I would suggest that during difficult economic times, brand is the only thing you have to count on - I believe that would be a business basic. Most unfortunate!

  • small print?  you have a 100% icon in the bottom right hand corner of the page on your screen, just above the time - just roll it up to 120% or 125% or larger depending on how large you need the print to be.

PearlG, I have looked for this icon but it's not there on my page anywhere.  In any case, the small print is only part of the problem with the new forums.

And it took several minutes for my post to actually go up, and as you can see, it ended up being duplicated.  Blech!
