Father’s Day Gifts

With Father’s Day around the corner, I knew it was time to treat my Dad to more than a barbecue party (where he’ll have to cook, obviously). As a great griller, I think he deserves more than a bottle of spice-rub. Lucky for me, I stumbled upon a small knife shop on Dupont Street in Toronto, not far from our usual H&H favourites, Angus & Company, and Pimlico.

Hacher & Krain boasts chef-quality knives from around the world: France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Spain and Japan. Greg, the store’s owner, was quite knowledgeable and helped me pinpoint which knife would suit my Dad’s cooking style. I must say, the displays, built by Greg himself, were quite spectacular.

What I love about this small shop is that you don’t have to be a professional chef (or make a celebrity chef’s income!) to find the perfect knife. My pick was this French Sabatier — a practical, multitasking chef’s knife that my Dad can have and use for a lifetime.

If your dad isn’t one to frequent the kitchen, here are some other great gift ideas:

Bring garage storage to a whole new level with this simple cabinet from Canadian Tire. A couple of them would hide away messy garage clutter in a cinch.

No garage? No problem. This 5″ by 5″ storage box from Indigo would look great on a desk or kitchen counter.

For the most tech-y of dad’s, pick up a modern tablet holder like this one from West Elm.

Happy weekend!
