Ask A Designer: Stylish Teen’s Room

Q. I’d like some suggestions for my 18-year-old daughter’s room. It’s 15’8″ x 14′, and the walls are Forest Moss (2146-20) by Benjamin Moore. She likes the colour, so we’re keeping it. Would navy work as an accent for bedding? I’d also like to add a TV sitting area.

A. That’s a very gutsy green, and I’m excited you want to work with it! I often use green and blue together, but in this case I think a softer, watery blue, like the one in the inspiration shot, will be better than navy for the bedding.

It’s always best to have the bed be the first thing you see when entering a bedroom, so move the bed underneath the window (as in our floor plan). This will also balance out that wall. There are a few other elements in the inspiration room that will work nicely here. An upholstered headboard in a small-scale geometric will help establish the bed as the primary focus — it has a youthful energy, and the chartreuse will create nice tension against the green walls. And I like the blue colour of the silk drapes, but suggest using it for a roman shade in a more casual linen fabric.

For the sitting area, I love Ikea’s new Strandmon wingchair in Vellinge Blue. Position two where the bed is currently to create a cosy nook for watching TV or reading. Round out that setup with a footstool and a cute side table. Then, layer a pair of pillows with Sarah Campbell Garden Path covers from West Elm on the chairs; the punchy floral will look great against the navy.

Place your existing dressers side by side on the wall opposite the closet, with the TV on the top of one so it can be viewed from both the bed and sitting area. A fresh coat of paint and new hardware will easily bring the dressers into the new design. Sherwin-Williams‘ Verditer Blue (DCR-078) is a lovely blue-green that will complement the new bedding. Then, play up the room’s green using Anthropologie’s mercury-glass Melon knob in Gold or crystal octagonal knob in Moss.

With its fun shape and pale tones, Anthropologie’s Cooled Globes lamp base is perfect for the new scheme — either at the bedside or in the new seating area.
