Behind The Scenes: Designing The 2015 TIFF Red Carpet Suite

House & Home Design Editor Jenna Cadieux

H&H’s Jenna Cadieux shares the design inspiration behind the 2015 TIFF Red Carpet Suite.

It’s that time of year when celebrities flock North of the border to attend the Toronto International Film Festival. For the second year in a row, House & Home partnered with the festival to design the official 2015 TIFF Red Carpet Suite. Suzanne Dimma, Mark Challen and I were delighted to create a suite for ticket holders to enjoy pre-screening cocktails and celebrity sightings from inside Roy Thomson Hall. Get a behind-the-scenes peek at the design inspiration for the exclusive lounge.

The Inspiration

When designing the suite we were inspired by the work of McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors. Their spaces are layered and decorative, while maintaining a contemporary airiness and modernity. We were drawn to the combination of handsome, sculptural furnishings paired with a soft, stony palette of off-white, mushroom, lavender and pale blue. This was a dramatic departure from our design last year, which featured bold accent walls and mid-century furnishings.

The Design Concept

Our goal was to create a suite that had understated elegance, a feeling of quiet sophistication. Here’s what we prepared for our design concept presentation to the team at TIFF:

The Finished Product

The main seating area has a large window that looks out onto the red carpet. The oversized sectional provides optimal group seating, and pairs beautifully with the iconic mid-century armchairs. To give weight to this arrangement, we used three bunching tables and a fabulous concrete-top end table. The floor lamp has a sculptural quality and contrasts our floating triptych of influential TIFF celebrities that are mounted behind plexiglass. The soft off-white wall colour used throughout is Paper Mache AF-25 by Benjamin Moore.
