Charles Pétillon Balloon Photographs

There’s something slightly sinister about this photography project by French artist Charles Pétillon, and it’s not just the title — which is, fittingly, “Invasions.” In each shot, white balloons explode from buildings, interrupt public spaces or, as in “Mutation 2″ (above) float menacingly in the forest, conjuring an image of aliens, or some kind of biological threat. And in fact, in many of the images, the balloons are metaphorical stand-ins for a biological threat: people. Still, there’s something beautiful about each image, despite the slightly uneasy feeling they might prompt.
