Colourful French Style

French interiors are always a popular subject at H&H and I can see why: the romantic curves, the ornate details, the comfort of natural materials and the charming old world appeal. Although many think the colour palette is limited to neutrals with the occasional gold accent, French decor is so much more. So, in honour of spring, I share with you some lovely authentic French spaces that have embraced colour wholeheartedly.

Seafoam, pink and yellow make a bold statement, but the playfulness of these hues keeps it young. I like how the cane chairs add a country flair. (Speaking of cane chairs, check out Joel Bray’s gorgeous cane chair makeover!) Also, check out the fireplace: what a great way to give new life to a boxy brick frame!

Pink and green again! This time, the tile floor keeps it casual. So pretty!

What a bathroom! That blue freestanding tub is spectacular. When I look at these glamorous photos, I try to deconstruct them to see which elements I could incorporate into my own home. Here, a plant sits in a vintage bird cage, which is easy to do, and the colour palette of muted grey-blues is key to the overall serene look.

Another spectacular tub, this time with feminine appeal. Those thick, painted stripes create a pretty boudoir look.

This bedroom doesn’t shy away from purple. When the furniture, linens and upholstery match, it creates a saturated and unified space (and in this case, distracts from the awful floor!).

A classic country colour — pale moss green. I love how the French keep it simple: a barn lamp, a heavy wood table, off-white ceramic accessories and pretty, decorative mouldings.

Here, bright turquoise trim draws attention to solarium windows. The yellow hutch, mismatched chairs and dainty faucet are absolutely charming.

Yellow spray paint is a great way to spruce up old garden furniture. I love the bistro look they’ve created here.

Most seaside architecture shines with vibrant colours, and the Basque coast is no different.

Of course, I couldn’t blog about France without mentioning food, and the only thing that comes to my mind: Gâteau Basque! Like any authentic French dessert, every family has their own recipe. I love the custard-filled ones, but I’ll leave you here with a fruit-filled version from Cannelle et Vanille (a Basque ex-pat!) that will have you going back for seconds. Click here for the recipe. Enjoy!
